CHARACTER
✧ NAME: Aðalgeir "Geir" Brynjúlfsson
✧ SERIES: Original Character
✧ HISTORY: There are many worlds in many universes. Some are connected, some are not. This one is a world much like our own, but there is a large difference: the presence of magic. While the histories are similar, magic and the magical creatures (called fey) have contributed to many differences in history, religion, and society. One of these differences is the popularity of “exotic” magic in servants and slaves among the upper classes of European society, and it is this difference that marked quite a bit of Aðalgeir’s life.
Born in a small village in the 1800s with his identical twin brother, Gunnar, Geir was raised by his mother. His father had died before their birth, as warriors unfortunately tend to do. Though magic society in Geir’s world is matriarchal in nature and passing on magic to males is almost unheard of and considered taboo, his mother recognized that, due to their properties as twins, Geir and Gunnar would be able to make use of it. As she passed on her magic, most notably that of spatial manipulation, she also passed on two of their fathers belongings: a shield to Gunnar and a spear to Geir.
Unfortunately, their mother’s good intentions made them look quite exotic, and so when a party of slavers attacked their village, Geir, Gunnar, and their mother were captured. The three were brought to England. This happened at such a young age that Geir cannot remember where his village was located, or even much of his native tongue. There came an opportunity in their captivity, however, for one of the three to escape. Gunnar took the chance and promised to return with help, but he never returned and no help ever came.
Geir was allowed to stay with his mother, but he was still a slave, and was forced to work hard labor. After his mother died, his life of labor having helped Geir gain a buff physique, the young man was forced to fight for sport. He still carries the scars from his life as a slave to this day, his grimoire having grown around them.
Sold once again, Geir found himself in the hold of a slaver ship. Delirious, he called upon the god Odin, desperate for something to change. A being appeared before him, and it was this being who told him what became of Gunnar - his brother was in America, living as a privileged servant to a rich coven. This specter then offered to free him so that he could pursue his vengeance, saying that Odin would take his due from him once that vengeance was gained. Geir readily agreed, and the ship was destroyed. He did, in fact, escape, but upon reaching the shore, the exhausted, now freed slave passed out.
When he came to, Geir discovered that he had been rescued by an American man. However, that same American had recently been in contact with the company that had sold him, and he fled. It was then that he took up the habit of wearing a mask and veil to disguise his identity; as a former slave with vengeance to wreak upon his brother, he could not afford to be recaptured and sold again. However, the specter that Geir believed to be Odin appeared again, and told him that there was only one way for him to find his brother: to follow Elijah Morgan, the same American man who had rescued him. Without much choice, Geir tracked Elijah down and apologized for the misunderstanding, offering a partnership at the same time.
Geir has worked with Elijah ever since, though he has not informed him of the real reason he is following him. The two are finally headed for America, and Geir is ready to fulfill his vengeance.
✧ TIMELINE: Just after arriving in America with Elijah.
✧ PERSONALITY:
If Geir had to be described in an emoticon, I would use “:|”. He is very serious, and with a past like his, it isn’t surprising. Most humor and sarcasm are lost on him, though that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s willing to take all things at face value. He doesn’t communicate very well with others, with the exception of Elijah, thanks to how long the two have been working together. While he has a very good grasp of English, it can still be difficult for Geir to fully get across what he means. Many social cues of conversation are lost on him, though he does have a fairly good grasp of social etiquette outside of conversation.
Geir is very slow to trust, which leads to being very guarded. He comes off as mysterious to many people because of this. His thoughts, his past, and himself in general are secrets that even Elijah, the one person he does fully trust, does not understand (at least not all the way). However, if he trusts someone a little bit or doesn’t believe he’s about to be attacked or captured (something that could happen at almost any time, in his opinion), he is far more likely to be open in conversation. His life and his liberty are priorities; Geir is not willing to allow himself to lose either, at least not until he has found his brother.
His belief that Gunnar abandoned himself and his mother has spawned into deep-seated hatred. It is his drive for vengeance, to kill his brother, that makes Geir do much of what he does. However, if someone does ask him what his goal is, his answer is typically that he wishes to complete his grimoire. Geir himself does not think that this is likely to happen, believing that Odin may very well want his life once the deed is done. He is willing to give it, but only then. (Little does he know that the entity was not in fact Odin and that the price will actually be one of his eyes). In fact, Geir doesn’t tend to think of himself in personal terms. For most of his life, his sole motivations have been his mother’s welfare, his own survival, or vengeance against his brother. Nothing else has ever mattered. If you ask him what his favorite food was, he wouldn’t be able to tell you.
Despite his long-standing grudge and hatred for Gunnar, his own flesh-and-blood, Geir is actually somewhat slow to anger. Elijah is the only person who can easily exasperate or annoy him. That said, Geir will easily forgive him for angering or upsetting him. Anyone else may want to watch themselves. Geir is quick to physically retaliate if sufficiently provoked or if he believes he is in danger. If you go for anywhere vital, even in a spar, you had better hope you laid some ground rules down before hand, because it’s possible that he could break you in half.
Despite only following Elijah in order to find his brother, Geir has come to consider him a close friend - perhaps his only friend. While he hasn’t told the man everything about him, Elijah is the only one he fully trusts, and he is able to read him quite easily (though he has no idea that Elijah is attracted to him - however, he does know that Elijah favors men over women). Because of his close bond with Elijah and no others, Geir can often become jealous when someone else takes up much of the other man’s time. This often leads to periods of moodiness where, though he is only really irritated by Elijah, he seems rather grumpy (almost childishly so).
✧ ABILITIES/POWERS: Geir is extremely proficient with his spear (and likely other polearms). He is also highly skilled with knives and hand-to-hand combat, and is extremely strong. He is fluent in German and has varying levels of proficiency with English and other European languages. His grimoire contains both the basic magics (elemental, manipulation of physics, and healing) and his specialized magic, the manipulation of space. This was inherited from his mother and is primarily used to create bags and pockets of semi-infinite holding. It is also used to stow his spear, which creates the illusion of “summoning” it to his hand. His grimoire itself is focused more on his right side than the center. Toward the top, it is curved in something like a half-heart, but the lines turn rigid and form a netted, web-like shape further down. His grimoire has spread and grown along the raised scars he gained while a slave instead of being broken or corrupted by them. His brother, Gunnar, is fluent in the use of long incantations or songs (Geir calls them “galdrs”), and Geir seems to be the only one who is able to effectively repel and counter their effects.
✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: Night.
✧ MASK DESIGN: He actually wears a mask and veil at all times already. The veil is black, as is the mask, and the mask covers most of his face with the exception of one eye.
✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: None at the moment.
SAMPLES
✧ FIRST PERSON:
[ Anyone in the house might notice a tall, brawny man walking through the halls with a spear. Thanks to the way the PORTALs like to turn on themselves, anyone on the network might notice him, too. Examining the windows, doors, and furniture, Geir is frowning to himself. Whether he knows about TENEKA or not, he’s doing a very good job of keeping his thoughts private.
Rapping on a window pane with his spear, his scowl deepens. ]
No traps. No bars.
[ He continues on, heading toward the front door of the house. He stands for a moment, looking it over before kneeling. Though it isn’t clear, he’s searching for any magic that might prevent him from exiting the house. ]
…Nothing.
[ Strange, to be held captive and yet be allowed outside. Then again, he hasn’t yet exited to see what’s out there. It could very well be walled in, just out of sight from the looks he got out the windows.
Standing again, Geir nods to himself. He will try to find Elijah first. They were together before he woke up here; hopefully he will be somewhere here, too. ]
✧ THIRD PERSON:
Geir has been on many ships in his lifetime, but only two hold the importance that this one does for him. The first was hardly a ship, though in his youth, he and his brother called it such. It was more like a raft, built by two young boys to have adventures like their father did before them. Their mother had helped them make it seaworthy, though she warned them not to go too far. Gunnar had stood with his shield, and Geir had stood with his spear, and they had battled imaginary dragons and tulpas and neighboring villages from the safety of their raft.
When their village was raided, he had looked back, and their raft had been sitting there alone. He had put it out of his mind afterward; there had been more important things, his family, to look after. Then Gunnar had left, slipped away, and it was Geir and his mother, not the raft, that were left behind without promise of help or return from the other.
The second ship had been a slaver. He had been below deck, chained, bound for a destination that he was never told and did not care to know. He had no idea what would have been waiting for him on the other side, at least not in detail; slavery still, that was all. Delirious, he had called on the old gods, on Odin the All Father, and his prayer had been answered.
He had been glad to see that ship sink, even as he swam to shore.
This ship, the third, was one that he did not want to sink but would leave behind all the same. Standing near the bow, arms folded across his chest, Geir watched the waves. There were seagulls overhead; land would be in sight soon. America. His brother would be there, and he would drive his spear through his heart, and that would be the end.
From behind him, someone cleared their throat. He didn’t turn to see, but he didn’t have to; he knew the feel of Elijah’s magic as easily as his own.
“Cap'n says we'll be reachin' port in about an hour. Got everything?”
Geir kept his eyes on the horizon, but nodded. “And you?”
“Yeah.”
There was nothing for him to say to that, and Elijah seemed to be able to tell that he wasn’t in the mood for a conversation. The other man walked away, and Geir continued to look forward.
He would find his brother, he would kill him, and he wouldn’t look back at this ship.
✧ ORIGINAL CHARACTER QUESTION:
To be quite honest, Geir’s probable first reaction is to glare at everything within sight. From there, he will have three goals: discovering if Elijah is in the city, discovering if his brother is in the city, and (upon finding that Gunnar isn’t within Promenade) finding a way out. Though he will do his best not to show it, Geir has very strong feelings about being held somewhere against his will. That said, with how slow he is to trust, it’s uncertain whether or not he will readily join the Resistance, either. It’s more likely that he will try and figure out what he can on his own at first, but once he discovers that gods are trapped here, too (with help from Elijah trying to get him to be cooperative), he will work with others to find a way back.
