They generally seem to run no longer than a week, although there seems to be little way to tell the precise length of any of them until they end. Our captors seem to like to inconvenience us at every turn.

It's easy enough to control. Standard elemental magic with the appropriate affinities to match, although I imagine you've already noticed that much.
