"But this!" she cried, meaning everything that had just happened between them. "Someone is going to end up heartbroken at the end of all this. I can't make you both happy. Even if that's all I want in the world."

Severus nearly commented that someone already had several times over in life but he managed to hold his tongue on that front. "I know you're going to hate the idea but... maybe don't tell James about this?" He wouldn't call it a lie so much as not telling James about something that didn't concern him.

"As for being heartbroken or otherwise - if you love me then I'm willing to take the risk of being heartbroken. This is the first time in a long time I've felt happy. I'll take the consequences if they come. I can live a double life - I've done it before. So from my standpoint I'm willing to agree to whatever you want if it means you'll still visit me." He left off mention of sex because he pretty much thought it would go without saying at this point along with plain enjoying each other's company

Lily was quiet for a moment, thinking.

"We could have an affair, is what you're saying," she said, thoughtfully.

Severus cringed. "I don't really like that label but that is one option. And...," he paused, searching for the right words, "this isn't about sex for me. Granted, it was good - it was really good and I'll be the first one to say I would like more of that in the future - but you know that's not the reason I've stayed in your life. I've stayed because I would do anything for you - I love you and I want you to be happy. Leaving James would make you unhappy. I... I can't ask you to do that."

Lily nodded in agreement. And then another thought occurred to her.

"James will kill you if he finds out."

"Lily - I'm technically dead already. And I couldn't think of a better reason for getting killed. However," he looked her in the eye, "if you think I'm going to let James Potter kill me even if I'm already dead you are sorely mistaken. Only reason he won before was dumb luck on his part and just plain dumb on mine. I won't kill him - but I'm not going to let him kill me, either." He smirked. "I've gotten a little better at dueling since we were in school."

And by 'a little' he meant 'a lot'.

Lily nodded again.

"But still. I can't tell him." She closed her eyes to hide the tears that were rising to them.

"This isn't the kind of person I am, Severus," she said, very softly. "What am I doing?"

"I'm not sure," he sighed. "The thing is we were never supposed to meet again. That's why this is such a mess. It wasn't supposed to happen. This place, like you said, is sort of a refuge from bad choices - allowing the impossible to happen. But... I guess you can make more bad choices here." Severus cringed at his words. Referring to himself as a 'bad choice' was not pleasant.

Lily brushed his hair out of his face. No. This wasn't a bad choice. Just one that really complicated things. "Yes. The circumstances are different here. When we all go back to where we're supposed to be..." she gasped as she realized once again that for Severus that was just to being dead, "...everything will go back to normal. These are special circumstances."

She leaned in to kiss him softly, then pulled back, searching his eyes. "Maybe this is why we're here."

Severus nodded, a little sadly, as he knew what she had just been reminded of. This was time he wasn't supposed to have. Once it was over he was back to being worm chow.

His eyes lingered on hers, letting Lily search as she pleased. "Maybe," he replied before leaning in to kiss her. He would never grow tired of doing that now that he had permission to do so. "Maybe I just reached Heaven without anyone noticing I sneaked in," Severus whispered, a smile evident in his voice.

Lily laughed softly, hear features smoothing out a bit. "Maybe we're all dead. Maybe James and I just don't remember the last three years."

Severus was glad to see she was relaxing some. "Who knows? Evidently anything is possible here." He gave her an affectionate squeeze kissing her again.

"That," he commented, his face still very close to hers, "is something I will never grow tired of doing."

She smiled. "What, the kissing?" she asked, closing the space between their lips again.

He pulled his mouth away just long enough to answer her. "Yes - to name one thing." There were a variety of other things he wouldn't get tired of doing if she would let him take such liberties again.

Lily hummed into another kiss. "I'm rather fond of it as well," she said, right up against his lips.

"Glad to hear it." He smiled against her lips. "There are a few other things I won't get tired as well."
