AUTHOR'S NOTE: Well, my plans for writing the main female characters for The X Files and Californication didn't quite work out. I think I've managed to write Scully, Samantha Mulder, Teena Mulder, Melissa Scully, Margaret Scully and Ellen. So 6 out of the 14 I had planned, and most of those were about Scully. But I'm pretty happy with what I've come up with, and I've celebrated some of the strong female characters we have in the fandom at least. This is the last one.
_______________
She isn’t sure at what point lust turned into love. At what point the first person she thought of calling when something went wrong was him, not Bill.
It happened slowly, the way these things do. Innocuous, at first; his touch on her shoulder when Bill stormed off after a fight. His glances accidental, harmless. Bill doesn’t suspect.
He doesn’t suspect when she comes home late either.
“WI,” she says. “We were talking about bake sales, raising money for the church roof. I lost track of the time,” she throws over her shoulder as she heads into the bathroom to scrub his scent off her with Imperial Leather soap.
They meet in secret, after fictional WI meetings, parent evenings at the children’s schools. They skulk in the shadows, the brush of his fingers on her throat an electric flame. It is dangerous, she knows. There are too many risks, too much at stake. But when Bill turns his back on her after they make love she thinks of him - of his gentle touch, his soulful eyes.
She isn’t sure at what point lust turned into love, but it happened. It’s too late now for her to do anything to change it.
