_______________
She has always loved Fox, in her own way of course. Even as a young (younger) and naive (naiver) agent she loved the intensity that surrounded him, the passion he invested in his work. Making the transition from partner to friend to lover had been surprisingly easy. He lapped up the attention she gave him with a perpetually surprised look, as though he couldn't quite believe that someone like her could be interested in someone like him. As though there was some other reason she ran her smooth fingers over his supple chest, leaned in to kiss him as he talked through his slides.
Which, of course, there was.
But she allowed herself to fall in love with him even as she broke down the heavily layered walls he had built up, even as she worked her way to the truth that would eventually be used to destroy him.
Watching him lie, semi-awake and dreaming, on the cold slab before her she can't help but sense some old spark still there, some half dormant feeling that refuses to completely go away. And because she still loves him she can't let them do this to him. So she leaves, slides a small, rectangular piece of plastic into a book, where the person that Fox now loves most in the world will find it.
Murder, or being murdered, is such an easy way to slip under the net, she thinks as she watches Dana Scully drive away.
