Title: Sexism & Semantics
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (can also be seen as meta for Harry Potter)
Characters: Kennedy/Willow Rosenberg
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 320
Prompt: Day 13 - witch
Summary: Kennedy notices something while reading 'Harry Potter'

Kennedy was stretched out on the bed reading as Willow folded laundry. “Huh,” said Kennedy.

“What?”

“Did you ever think about the sexism that shows itself in the ‘Harry Potter’ stories?”

“What?”

“I mean, a big deal is made about what in the magical world equates to racism, I guess, with the muggle-born and the house elves, that sort of thing, but Hermione doesn’t realize that there is a far greater insult to her than the word ‘Mudblood’. Now, don’t take this personally, but I think if she thought about it, the greatest insult to her would be the word ‘witch’.”

“Excuse me?”

“Now, I don’t mean present company or any of those Coven members you bring around for tea sometimes. I’m just talking about the word.”

“She’s the brightest witch of her age.”

“Yes, and that’s an accomplishment. But Harry’s not even in Hogwarts and he’s told that he’s a wizard. And when you look at that word, it implies the best and brightest, the most capable.”

“Well, he did kill the Dark Lord. Sorry, spoiler alert.”

“I’ve seen the movies. But Ron’s a wizard too. And the thing is, Harry didn’t have to do really anything to be called a wizard. The most incompetent male student at Hogwarts is still a ‘wizard’ and the most competent female student is a ‘witch’ and she gets all the linguistic baggage the readers bring with that word.”

“Baggage?”

Kennedy saw the look in Willow’s eyes and knew to backpedal. “Most readers. For myself, I find witches to be hot, smart, and extremely capable. But seriously, how far is a witch going to get in a place that is generally known as ‘the Wizarding World’?”

Willow sat down on the edge of the bed. “Damn, you just ruined ‘Harry Potter’.”

Kennedy set the book aside. “I’ll make it up to you.”

Willow leaned towards her. “You’d better,” she whispered against Kennedy’s lips.
