[BSG] Vid Recs: Kara "Starbuck" Thrace

Feb 10, 2008 11:31

I must admit that I am not even a particular fan of the new Battlestar Galactica, but one reason why I do keep watching is definitely my ginormous girl-crush on Katee Sackhoff the character of Starbuck. Second caveat: I am not a vidder, either, so most of the technical details and subtle efforts that the vidding community puts into their works go right over my head.

However, here is a list of mostly Starbuck-centric fanvids with brief comments on why I enjoy them quite a lot.

    * God Is a DJ and Cuz I Can by dualbunny are probably the Starbuck vids out there. Together, they cover both the party (Kara's kick-ass, devil-may-care attitude in S1 and parts of S2) and the hangover from hell on the morning after (all the relationships she keeps screwing up, all the crap that just keeps piling up in her life, and her attempts to go on, no matter what).

    * Masterpiece by sisabet uses a country/folk song that might at first appear to be an unusual choice for a military space opera, but it lends itself very well to a character study of a younger, more carefree Kara in the first season -- the one who wants to assert her independence and has still got the Big Damn Hero status: "Someday, everything is gonna be diff'rent / When I paint my masterpiece..."

    * Falling from the Sky (scroll down just a little bit) by jarrow272 is a rather relentless and dark view of Kara in the first two seasons of the show. She may be Galactica's Top Gun, but she fails most of her fellow pilots at some point. The juxtaposition of images to the lines "I found a church, and no one's there" as well as "Got some love, yes I dared" almost breaks my heart.

    * Mainstream by charmax covers the same period in the show as the vid above, with a similar focus on the military action and the space battles, but it presents a somehow more upbeat picture of Kara that foregrounds more of her toughness and strength. Even though it does get kind of dark, too: My favourite bit is probably the montage to the passage, "If we grow up we're all going to be famous."

    * Headlights by buffyann is a breathtaking atmospheric piece with an eerie, almost hypnotic quality. It's a wonderful take on Kara's arc in S3: Special destiny sucks.

    * And now we get to the really depressing stuff: In the Cold Light of Morning by hollywoodgrrl is an episode-centric vid for season 2's Scar, and it actually hurts. Emo content aside, I love the use of the mirror shots here.

    * The Greatest is another one of hollywoodgrrl's BSG vids. As far as an amateur can tell, it doesn't seem technically quite as proficient to me as "In the Cold Light of Morning", but it's about Kat and Starbuck, so I don't care. A lovely, moving tribute to two pilots, based on The Passage and Maelstrom, which made me cry like a baby. (Yes, I am a sap, okay?)

If you have got more recommendations, just let them keep coming in the comments. I'd also be interested in a similar post dedicated to Laura Roslin.
