Maybe it's elves.

So, I wrote a play. Man, it's been too long since I did that. Then I had some people over, plied them with delicious food that leorathesane made, and had them read and critique the script.

And at first it was terrifying in the ways you'd expect - what if it's awful; what if I can't actually write anymore - and then it was terrifying in a completely different way. Because people were saying some really awesome things - "I like that you did X"; "I like how you conveyed Y"; and I was utterly flattered and gratified, but at the same time I kept thinking, Holy shit I have no idea how I did X and Oh, crap, Y was not conscious at all".

This is petrifying because now I have to go do rewrites, and I have all these notes that say things like, "This is good; emphasize it more" and "Do more of this", and I have no freaking clue how I did them in the first place.

And it makes me realize: almost everyone knows how to put one word after another in script format, or prose format, or poetry format. But the thing that happens to those words that turns them into plays and stories and poems - well, even most of us who do this a lot haven't got a clue how it happens.
