Woah, that's an epic to-play game list. XD How much Mass Effect have you played? Because I will promote the heck out of that one over pretty much any game in the world, hahaha. I'm obsessed. (I've played through it TWICE, which is pretty rare for the girl that had completely finished exactly one video game as of a few years ago and has been playing determined catch-up ever since.)
OH, OH you must be the person I friended who likes the Queen's Thief series? I have been trying to remember who it was and I felt bad but it must've been you! Anyway, I am currently reading King of Attolia for the first time, about half-way through and I don't really like it. :( Which is bad because I loveloveloved The Thief and quite enjoyed Queen of Attolia (though I was kinda "o_O?!" about a certain out-of-left-field romantic development near the end... sparing anyone who might want to read the books from spoilers. AND THEY SHOULD. At the very least the first one.) Anyway, I can't bring myself to care about Costis. I really want to, but so far... no. I want more Eugenides, dang it! I feel deprived of his presence half the time.
Yeah, I've owned most of those games for a while, too. xD;;; At least since Christmas. Last summer I meant to beat a bunch of games, and I didn't beat a single one. Nada. So this time around I'm determined to at least beat SOME of them. As for Mass Effect...I think I played, like...the first five hours. XD; I watched my brother play and it was good! I just have so many hobbies that while I'm in college it's hard to know how to balance them all.

XD I remember feeling somewhat the same way when I was reading King of Attolia, particularly since Costis was the POV character and we kept not knowing what was going on with Gen. I think Costis gets enough character development that he becomes a really likeable character, however--by the end of the book, I really liked him, and as he starts to become more and more trusted by Gen we get to see more of Gen and what's going on with him, too. Plus, I really like how a certain relationship (you know, the spoilery one) was developed in KOA, too.
QOA was my first, though, so I might have a slightly different perspective on the series? I'm not sure how it would effect it, but it might.
Yeah, I just recently got into a section where Costis is with Gen more. Which is nice. But I still wish it was from Gen's POV. I am really not sure why Megan Whalen Turner did The Thief in first person, QOA in third-person from multiple (though mostly Gen's) POVs, and then KOA in Costis's limited third-person POV. With a few random scenes where he isn't there scattered throughout.
I like the glimpses at that relationship's development too, but I wish there were more of them particularly in the first half of the book where it's mostly Costis and the other guards. I did sort of like the scenes with Costis and his friend. And obviously anything where Gen was there, like the sparring.
My guess is she chooses the POV she does to hide what Gen is doing? The first was told through Gen, but he was purposefully hiding things throughout the story, the second kept switching around enough that it hid that Gen wasn't quite so helpless without his hand/was in love with Irene, and this book has Costis' POV to once again hide Gen's competency. Although why she couldn't do it in the same POV all the way through, I'm not sure, but at least the last book is probably to show how Gen appears to the people of Attolia.
I miss Sophos, too. ;-; I really hope we actually hear from him in the fourth book, I keep wondering when he's going to show up again.
Yeah, probably. Well, enough of my criticism of how certain aspects are written. XD I do enjoy it, after all. On a more positive side.. I really love the world with the three (well, four if you count the Medes) countries, and all the Greek-inspired stuff. It always makes me want to eat figs and yogurt, haha.
I am intrigued by well-written fiction series like Queen's Thief that are in an alternate world, but don't necessarily have much magic or creatures or elves or anything like that. (Those have their place and can be quite enjoyable, but it's so much more creative to work outside those cliches.) Kind of like Mindy Klasky's Glasswright series, which I would totally recommend if you haven't read it except they're out of print. :( Well, there's always the internet/library.
Yeah, the series has such a great world built into it. Although I do tend to like more heavy fantasy, but the almost...psuedo-Historical Fiction feel is a really nice touch. (Plus, well, there's always the gods in it for the fantasy bit.)
Yeah. Okay, so I just went and read the second half of the book and liked it a LOT more. Ahh, the fight at the end and some of the conversations about ruling and trust and such were so great. So looking at the book as a whole, it ended up being more interesting. I just had a hard time with seeing what the point was for the first 100 pages or so. Ah well. If I reread it at some point, it should probably tie in with the rest better.
