This morning's 7.1 scale earthquake in Christchurch is a long way from where I live and we are not affected.
Thankfully, no one has been killed, although there are a number of injuries. Apparently water and power are the main concerns for the residents there, and they hope to have power restored to places where it's out by 6pm tonight. Water may be a different issue and people are being urged to conserve it where they can. For the rest of things, there is a lot of structural damage in Christchurch and surrounding places (the quake was felt as far away as Invercargill in the south and Taranaki in the north), but the agencies who deal with such things appear to have most issues under control. It's very lucky that Christchurch doesn't have a lot of tall buildings, although there are certainly a lot of historic places that I hope haven't sustained too much damage.
My family's thoughts and wishes go out to anyone who's been affected by this, and we will certainly be offering any help that we can.
