So its nearly the end of another semester of Amherst, and I don't really know what to say about things. Taking 5 classes instead of 4 has been somewhat challenging: certainly I won't be complaining about how easy things were any more. Taking Chinese has been a big part of me feeling more and more challenged, given that its literally a time sink, sucking away time and adding to stress levels consistently. I like the language, surprisingly, but its really tough to learn, and is detracting from work elsewhere. However, given that my parents expect me to continue with it, I have no real choice in the matter. Such is life. :) Not that I mind, its great on the CV, and good for me in general to be picking up a language. I just wish it has an alphabet or something, y'know? Character based languages are ridiculous. I believe they must be the reason chinese people are so generally hard working today. They had to be, to master a language like that.
Anyway, my life this semester has been pretty boring. Well, thats not actually true. I've enjoyed it, but if I recounted the minute details of it, people would fall asleep, since so much of it has been about debate. Aside from the new car, which is dearly loved, this semester is notable because I qualified for nationals by reaching a debate final (for the first time). Debate has gone generally well, the club is going strong, with a record number of novices, a record amount of funding, and more achievements than we've had for years. We could be heading to a mini revival of the Amherst debate team, perhaps gesturing to those glory days when we were dominant. I'd love to be able to say I led the resurgence, and I'm hoping this is indicative of better and better things to come.
Social life has suffered as a result of debate, although grades are ok (except chinese). Probably aiming to calm down after the break and enjoy life more. This thanksgiving I'm going to Montreal, for a repeat of Spring Break earlier this year. I like Montreal a lot, and hope that it goes well. Need to find more people to go, and find out if anyone else I know will be there. This will be my first quasi road trip, since we'll be driving there. Hope the weather is good. I'm looking forward to a week without classes.
