All of my babies are sleeping right now.  I tried to take a photo of all of them together, but Ra blended into the carpet in her little patch of light.  Perhaps another time.  Daniel is still passed out from a nap to escape this steamy afternoon, and Po is above him in her 'apartment' (a nook she's claimed at the top of the couch).  It's so peaceful in here at the moment, just the sound of their calm up and down breathing, daniel with his heart across his chest like he's singing the star spangled banner..

Our lovely neighbors are on a short vacation at the moment, and we've been charged with baby-sitting their cats while their gone.  This amuses me because they are literal twins of our Po and Ra, except Po and Ra are called the hippie cats because they have much longer hair and are smaller (and more zen, I'd say).  Anyway, we live in  New Deal cooperative neighborhood established during the war in the 30s in a socialist spirit, so all of the houses are nearly identical, and attached to one another in little mini-courtyards all around.  There are secret passageways and underground tunnels woven throughout little patches of forest, gardens growing in every matchbox yard, trees, and more birds and squirrels than I have ever seen.  I love it here, in this neighborhood, but as soon as I leave I just want to escape to the mountains.  There are too many people, too much anger, pollution, ugliness, whatnot whatever all throughout this city and its surroundings.

But riding our bikes through the winding paths this morning to the co-op grocery to get coffee and orange juice, i feel like I'm in another country.  It feels quaint, and simple and efficient...much more European than American.  Very few people use plastic at the grocery, very few use their yards for useless grass, very few don't smile and wave hello or stop you for a long conversation when they see you.  I love the simplicity and community.

And so, watching our neighbor's cats, I got to thinking.  Their house is identical to ours in layout, except they live above, and we below.  I absolutely adore looking at what they've done with it.  Ripping up the carpet to expose the beautiful wood floors beneath, new trim, new countertops, an industrial looking sink, new pieces they brought in combined with pieces that have likely been their since the 30s.  I just loved to sit petting their cats, thinking about how many different, personal and beautiful versions of this same house are dotted throughout the neighborhood.  I love to look at people's spaces, and wonder how each piece in their home is treasured to them and in what way.  I love thinking about the many different ways we can make a house a home.

Forgive me, I've got the nesting urge lately, and I don't know how to make it go away.
