If I wrote "fifteen"...
As a college graduate, future doctor, and almost 22 year old, I think back on my life and the decisions that have lead me down this path. And this is the advice that I would give to a fifteen year old:
- Everything always gets better. Today may feel like the worst day of your life, like you’ll never get through it. But you will. And you’ll be a better person because of it.
- From the age of about 13-17, your hormones will be raging and you don’t have the ability to handle it. This will result in crazy emotions, unstable moods, and decisions you wish you never made.
- No girl at any age can have only a sexual relationship. Every girl falls in love with the boy she has sex with. But every boy does not.
- You can be original. At this point in society, it’s cool to be original. But don’t dress like a whore. You will regret it and it gives you a reputation even before you speak a word.
- Spend time alone. You learn the most about yourself when you’re lonely. Learn to appreciate being by yourself.
- When you reach college, remember this: in the future, you will never regret getting a good degree and not partying. You will always regret being a drunken idiot and losing chances to live a successful life.
- Society controls you more than you know. Friendships. Marriage. Children. You don’t have to do everything that everyone else does. People may not understand but those people don’t matter.
- Love is rare, but possible. But try and teach yourself that you may spend the rest of your life alone. This is not pessimistic. If you can learn this, you will forget about finding prince charming. You will take control of your own happiness, instead of relying on a perfect guy to give it to you. You can pursue dreams beyond marriage. And often, love comes anyway.
- Life is complicated. Don’t pretend you rule the world. Don’t act like the world owes you everything. Be strong. But understand that the decisions you make only contribute to the amazing person you’re going to be.
