On The Other Side

Not what I expected to write for my first SuJu fic, but...I kind of like it.

On The Other Side
pairing: Siwon/Heechul

She spots him more than a block away, slowly being swept towards her in the flow of Monday-morning commuters. She has no doubt that it is him-the suit is different, and it is somewhat of a shock to see him like this, dressed like a regular businessman, but even at this distance and in this crowd there is no mistaking his lips, his eyes, his walk. He hasn't changed at all, she thinks, and wonders if only the outside has stayed the same, and if Siwon really has turned into a businessman since she last saw him, switching identity like he had switched wardrobe.

And she also wonders if he will recognize her. The thought feels distant, impersonal, as if she were watching the scene play out on television, but she feels the pace of her heart quicken as he draws closer. She forces herself not to look at him as they pass each other, afraid that he will realize who she is, terrified that he won't, and just as he's passed without any sign of recognition and the relief and disappointment begin to rush through her, she hears:

"Hyung?"

She stops in her tracks, stands still for a long second as commuters brusquely elbow their way past her. Then she turns to look at him, raises her eyebrows, and waits. She will make him say it, make him say her name.

His eyes are slightly narrowed, like he is second guessing himself, but as he takes a step nearer they widen and a tentative smile plays across his lips. "That is you, isn't it, Heechul-hyung?"

Her body feels warm; she is suddenly conscious of her high-heeled shoes, her sundress, her breasts. "It's nuna now," she says, and can't help but smirk a bit when she sees his cheeks redden. A pause. Then, because she feels like she must tell him, like she would be lying if she didn't, "You look good, Siwon."

His smile widens, though not because of the compliment, she thinks. Suddenly, it is the smile he used to give her: warm, generous, unguarded. "You do too. You look..." His lips tighten, the way they do when he's trying to find a word, and then he says simply, "You look happy."

She considers it. "I am."

There is another pause, and then before she knows it he is holding her. "I'm happy for you," he says softly, and she knows he means it. It has been five years since she has been in his arms, but it feels the same. The way he holds her is late night TV in pajamas, barely-surpressed laughter on stage, the feel of the heater on his hands after frigid walks back to their apartment in the windy Seoul winter. The way he holds her says-has always said-"I love you," but back then, back when she was Heechul, she had never quite believed it, and she had never hugged him back. She had used all her willpower, hidden behind haughtiness, to keep her arms at her sides, because she was sure that once she grabbed on she would never be able to make herself let go.

Now, she uses all her willpower to keep the tears suddenly hanging heavy in her eyes from running down her face. Sighing, she wraps her arms around his neck and lays her cheek against his chest, listening to the sure, steady heartbeat on the other side.
