He's being smeared yes - not in Marca or As (who don't give a shit)

But he is in El Mundo (Madrid-based) and in ABC.

I guess the "wanted a new contract" accusation (every player wants a new contract though...so fans don't care...) didn't work as effectively as he thought it would.

Meh - it'll blow over. It's mainly awful because the Daily Mail, the Mirror, The Express, The Sun - have all picked it up, which is probably embarrassing. On the other hand, fans appear to realize it's a smear. And I saw this on Tumblr (It's Barcelona Paper Sport - who thinks it's hilarious Perez would take this route):
