I arrived back from Cannon Beach early this afternoon. I was beat, like a first time mother, and dove into my familiar bed after 4 nights in an outstanding hotel and took a much needed nap.
When I woke, I felt renewed -- so much so that I decided to make a 7.2 mile trek on foot to the nearest REI to pick up my new bike and ride her those same 7.2 miles back home.
1. Thank god for my iPod and it's steady tempo pushing me along.
2. Thank god for the weather holding out. The skies were clogged with very dark clouds just anxious to let go of their summer rain, but not one drop was felt and the cool breeze was welcomed across my sweaty brow.
3. Thank god for the super feet I bought about a week ago. They saved my feet from the cramping previously experienced. Who knew all I needed was a little support.
The walk there took about 2 hours -- giving me a leisurely 18 minute mile. I didn't jog at all, like I do at the gym, so the slow pace was expected, but for me, it wasn't all that slow. I'll gladly blame my short stature on that one. LOL. But I never got winded and I estimate a steady heart rate of about 150. I've gotten pretty good at figuring out my perceived heart rate based off my training with the heart monitor. Anywho...
The ride back was leisurely as well -- it took me about 40 minutes to get back home, but it was great to be out there. I'm a little leary of making left hand turns w/ cars, but I'm sure with more experience I'll get over my fear. The bike was perfect. Plenty of gears to get me through the teeny ups and downs in the basically flat road. I quickly learned that not having a bike lane sucks and riding on the sidewalk is okay as long as there's no one walking on it.
Ahh, I've got a lot to learn.
Like... getting over my fear of trying new things with new people. I've got my leg extended out into the street and I'm leaning forward, just about to take that big step and I'm a little excited at the potential, yet slight scared of getting hit by a bus.
