The greatest feeling in the world is that of contentment. It is that moment when you are neither happy nor sad, but rather, comfortably in between. The best way I could describe contentment is that feeling I get when I sit outside on a gray day, letting the spring breeze whisper its secrets to me. It is not fleeting like happiness, and it is not lingering like sadness.
For me, contentment is flying through the sky in a biplane with my dad sitting next to me. Both of our jaws hanging loose at the view. Weaving through buildings and above parks, where no one has a care in the world about us. Now, when I watch the planes land and take off at the run way by our house, I relax in my spot and think back to that special afternoon. And, everyday I wish I was up there with them, mingling with the birds.
Contentment is when I kiss my love for good luck as he hops across the creek on wobbling stones. Or, when we sit on the rock by the falls talking about who will be when we grow older. It is the feeling I get when he holds my hand and leads me through the seemingly endless woods. Letting that rare feeling engulf me makes me feel like we are seven and exploring in someone’s incredibly cool back yard.
I feel contentment when I sit down after dancing forever. All around me, my family members are laughing and in that moment we are one. We are living on that dance floor and in that bar. I look around at every one’s gleaming faces and know that no matter who we are and what troubles we must face, for this hour we are all content.
It is that brief moment, after hysterical laughter when everyone gets still. You exhale and feel a great weight lifted off your shoulders. Tears of happiness are streaming down your face and your stomach aches from the intense laughing. And sometimes you think, nothing in this world will ever be that funny.
So when you’re sad and thinking that it is all over, look in the skies for an airplane, go wandering in the woods, spend the entire night dancing until your feet feel like they’ll fall off, or find something to laugh about.
