Honeymoon

Terry and I took off for the North Shore yesterday with just a vague idea of what to do when we got there. I had Gooseberry Falls State Park on the list, and that was it. Driving up 35 we passed a billboard advertising Cove Lodge as having romantic lake view rooms. I'm used to thinking of post-Labor Day as after peak tourist season, so hadn't reserved us a room anyplace. I simply wasn't worried. We discussed it and decided to try them as they were just up the shore a bit from Gooseberry.

We hiked around Gooseberry Falls, which was packed!! Apparently, Sept is peak tourist season on the North Shore due to expected leaf color. We hiked away from the crowds and enjoyed the solitude and views. We took a lot of pictures of ourselves. Upon leaving the park, I called Cove Lodge to see if they had a vacancy. Cell reception was poor, so I heard "We have one..." followed by cut up syllables and then a dropped call. When we arrived, the front desk lady laughed because on her end it seemed like I had hung up when she gave me the price for the queen corner end room with jacuzzi, fireplace and deck. Yeah, it was expensive, it was sweet and peak season. We took it and it was amazing!!

The corner end room juts off the building so we had windows on three walls--- two walls in the bathroom, which had its own space heater, big windows facing Lake Superior directly, and sliding glass doors opening onto a deck and wooded view with more lake. We were right on the shoreline, downhill from the highway so it was very quiet. A smoke free, pet-free lodge, they focus on providing a quiet, cozy, romantic getaway.

We ate dinner there, (fine dining I had filet mignon wrapped in bacon!) and shared a magnificent turtle sundae for dessert. Our table was again in a corner, with nothing but windows between us and the view of the moon reflecting on the lake. We enjoyed the stars. We laughed about how we're on our honeymoon but we're really an old married couple, with me picking food off my plate and putting it on his and he eats it with no words needed to explain why. We were tired and asleep a little after ten. (No nightlife in Beaver Bay, pop 175.) So when our fireplace made some pinging noises this morning at 6 am, we both woke up and noticed that the sunrise was just starting over the lake. It was mostly cloudy, so as the sun rose, it seemed like the whole sky caught fire. We took advantage of our early start and embarked on a six mile hike up and down rough terrain to multiple lookouts. We saw very few people on this hike.

We finished with a drive inland to see the red maple leaves as most of the shoreline is birch and not yet colorful. Now we're home and my feet are sore.
