Just because you want to do something doesn't mean you can. Sometimes you have to do things. I don't want to get a job either, but I know I will have to because things cost money. Aunt Em and Uncle Henry aren't here to take care of me.

Why would you do that? Well, I suppose the simple answer is your starter attacks the wild Pokémon and then once you've weakened it, you throw an empty Pokéball at it. It really doesn't make much sense, honestly.
