A Fairly Long-ish Post on Seattle and Such

Nov 24, 2007 17:08

A lot of things have gone on since Tuesday evening. If you want to know about anything before Friday night, read Tracy's LJ; he's already posted about it.

I've started a new scarf. Purr.

So, last night after Tracy and I went book/dinner/fabric shopping, and after we had to escape from the musical he did not want to watch, Tracy and I picked up his friend Tanya and headed toward Seattle's U district. We went to the coolest little coffee and chai shop called "Trabant" and played several rounds of cards and had several rounds of flavored chai. I had a chocolate spice one and a hazelnut one. I enjoyed getting to know Tanya; she's pretty cool.

Tanya slept over, and we headed out to Seattle's international district this afternoon. We had bubble tea, stopped at a Japanese bookstore, and ate pho for lunch. Pho, by the way, is pronounced like the first two letters in fuck. I specify this because in Bellvue there is a pho shop called, "what the pho?" I was amused.

Both while drinking rose-flavored bubble tea at the Taiwanese place and eating pho later-on, I was musing about how cool it is that the people in the international district get to form there own little communities with their own language and culture and shops. I am quite jealous. The groups seems so intimate, so hard to crack. I remember how cool it felt when me and my other Japanese-speaking friends could go and hide in the Japanese-themed shops and share our language and (in my case adopted) culture. But even then it was not the same for me. I can never be fully integrated because I am the obviously foreign one. The anomaly. There are problems with the type of exclusivity I describe, but it still has its benefits. I really like the international district. Maybe one day I will move there and find a Japanese community to try and become an active member of. Besides, it has cool Asian stuff to buy!

While at Kinokuniya, I picked up two of my favorite Japanese magazines. One even has a poster! Yay room decorations! I have even discovered a new band/frontman to potentially worship. Tasty Mao. If he is at least as talented as he is good looking and personable in interviews, "Sadie" will be a new favorite band!

At Uwajimaya, I got a lot of Japanese sweet stuff. Yum.

I tried to meet up with my friend Ben, who goes to U-Dub. We made a deal to try and meet downtown today, but he never called me. His loss.

Well, that was Seattle for me. Lovely city, seriously. I vow to return one day.

I miss you guys, though. It'll be nice to see you all on Sunday.

Afternote: Just checked out Sadie on crunchyroll.com (where my screenname is hotaru_heart, btw) and they are awesome! Almost as awesome as Dir en Grey. I <3 Mao hard-core!
