So….I saw the fifth movie last night. It wasn’t bad. Umbridge was masterful, and Shacklebolt, in his like two lines, was supremely cooooool. They cut Mundungus and Marietta completely, as well as Ginny’s annoying git of a boyfriend, but now my brain hurts from tooooo much thinking.
There were two bits of plot that didn’t surface that I thought could possibly cause a gaping hole when they need to make movie 7. But then again, since Rowling didn’t protest them, maybe the theorists are wrong. I don’t have a problem with them being wrong on one of the counts, but the second boggles my mind so greatly that I don’t know what to expect for book 7.
For those that don’t keep up with the Harry Potter news like I do, the director was originally going to cut Kreacher from the movie entirely (side note…his voice was so….manly…it was scary! I thought his rants would sounds like Gollum!) but Rowling protested, saying they really needed to set him up because he was necessary to book/movie 7. As it was, you only saw him a couple times ranting. Nothing about his betrayal of Sirius and all the trouble he caused.
Soo….Regulus Black. Someone refresh my memory, was he mentioned in the earlier movies? I don’t think so. When Sirius and Harry are in the tapestry room with the Black family tree, he isn’t mentioned at all. You can’t even see his name in the background. Dear lord, I spent more time looking at the names than I did at them during the conversation. Arcturus was in the shot a lot, Phineas was too (I’m disappointed we missed his theatrics too), Andromeda, briefly, Bellatrix was of course discussed, and Sirius as well. So…I mean, the fairly logical theory is that Regulus Black = RAB. But, if never gets mentioned before…oh…movie 7…it seems a bit cheap…considering how many other tiny references the movie threw in (like 3 seconds of Aberforth and a goat in Hog’s head). But…if Regulus isn’t RAB….then who is? There really are no other good contenders.
I was also kinda surprised that Sirius’ gift of the two way mirrors didn’t make an appearance. A lot of the theorists believe that Harry will get to talk to Sirius again somehow (kinda reinforced by Luna at the end of the movie that things you lose have a strange way of coming back to you), and the mirrors were a prime candidate.
I guess the biggest inconsistency that bothered me about the movie was that Harry -teaches- the DA Levicorpus. WTF. At first, I didn’t realize what spell they were learning to make people float in the air, because I seem to remember Levicorpus keeps people upside down by the foot. But, in the DoM battle, Luna uses the same spell on a Death Eater. I mean, yes, it’s not a huge issue to pull that out of the 6th movie, since Sectumsempra is the really important Prince spell….but still~
There were a lot of -slight- references to things that happened in the book that they didn’t put into the movie. Like, when they first enter Grimmauld Place, Tonks does trip over the troll foot umbrella stand, but they took out Mrs. Black’s portrait. Which is too bad. They could have put a bit of screeching in the background.
Also, when Harry enters the MoM, they have this lovely panned shot of the lobby area with the golden statues of the wizard/witch/centaur/house elf…I forget the rest. They were a lot bigger than I expected. But…they didn’t become a part of the battle.
I was kinda hoping, although not surprised that a lot of the DoM was taken out. There was a lot I was hoping to see (the brain room, the time room).
Oh, another thing…after the Cho/Harry kiss, why the hell did he describe the kiss as wet? She wasn’t crying at all! Stupid! I mean, it’s such a tiny detail, why would you even do that?
Also, Hermione was a bit mean! I mean, she -knows- Ginny is in love with Harry. She’s the one who advises her on her course of action…so…why would she announce, with Ginny less than a foot away, how hot Cho was for Harry. Now really.
