Personality
Saburo (Hakaider) is simple enough character on the surface. He's a destructive/fighter type cyborg created to destroy his brother Jiro (Kikaider)--which he attempts to do with no small amount of havoc and enjoyment. However, there is far more to him and his purpose. He shows and seems to feel more emotions than he, as a robot, should. However, he only acknowledges these when he can use them to his benefit. He also doesn't appear to understand some of them.
Part of 'his' emotions may not originate with him. Saburo carries the living brain of Dr. Komyoji Den (his creator,) in his head. This isn't his primary memory or personality circuit, but it is shown that he can draw information from it. Komyoji was also able to take over Saburo's body during a moment when the cyborg was vulnerable. Because Saburo can take understanding from the brain, it might also explain his more complex emotions. Many other robots (except the ones with 'gemini circuits,' or artificial souls) are simple and only display emotion that they are programmed for. Whereas Saburo displays depth and even denial of some feelings. However, a few of the simpler robots develop emotions of some kind later in the canon. It's possible that all of them can, but not patterned in exactly human ways unless they have a gemini circuit.
Saburo's outward personality is brash, sly, and filled with egoist mayhem. The cyborg enjoys laughing (or whistling) evilly from rooftops while he orchestrates destruction below. He displays a great flair for the dramatic: complex plots, setting a backlight behind himself for greater effect, manipulating his brother through high acts of cruelty, and joining battles on motorcycle. If an action moves him toward his goal and amuses him, he thinks highly of it. Even simple mocking and teasing banter seems to amuse him though--more so if it's toward someone he dislikes or considers important (such as Jiro, even if he intends to kill him.) Usefulness aside, he seems to like fighting and intricate plots for their own sake. Though he does usually reach a time in his endeavors when 'playtime is over,' and he fights more seriously.
He shows a few other outward emotions that the simpler robots never do--anger, jealousy, and possessive feelings. When Gill (the evil overlord who controls the robots) threatens to send a different robot after Kikaider, Saburo responds in a burst of anger and hisses "He is MY prey." He goes out of his way to keep the fight between himself and Kikaider--he even murders several other robots that try to interfere and spy during battles. His anger also shows up in his battles with his brother, when his brother refuses to 'take him seriously' and fight.
Another deep-seated emotion is pride. Saburo wants to kill his brother in his own way, with his own methods and pace, instead of destroying him quickly. He even pushes aside or outright ignores orders from Gill when it comes to this (something that normal robots are normally incapable of doing.) As he puts it "Doing that will give meaning...to my having been created to destroy Kikaider." He is searching for meaning of his own within his preset purpose to kill his brother. At the same time, he resents his purpose, and the purpose of all robots. He calls his creator 'guilty,' of creating robots, and calls both himself and his brother 'created and destroyed by human egotism.'
Saburo also hesitates within the bounds of his purpose. He accuses Jiro of the same thing, and his brother calls him on it. Whenever Saburo gets very close to ending their battle and killing Jiro, he finds some reason to withdraw or divert attention at the last moment. Yet he becomes very angry with Jiro when, at the end of one battle, Jiro doesn't finish the strife between them and destroy Saburo. His conflicted feelings are self-evident. Jiro begins to say 'You don't actually want to kill me,' and Saburo responds by shooting at him to shut him up. He's obviously in denial over his internal conflicts.
He also seems to have a twisted sense of honor and courage, at least where a worthy battle is concerned. Though he's capable of using, hurting and outright killing less worthy foes, a true battle should only be fought in a certain way--which is with both participants fighting at their full potential. Saburo often mocks Gill for his cowardly tactics (destroying Kikaider quickly before he can gain full strength, relying on 'toys' to take over the world.) He's annoyed that Gill doesn't trust him to destroy his brother using more risky and worthwhile methods. In fact, he is downright insolent and condescending in nearly every conversation with Gill.
Saburo also seems to thrive on complexity. If something is too simple (in an important matter,) he rejects it, and he develops plots in his mind that are labyrinthine (even if he does deviate for fun sometimes.) He seems to be very patient and he is--as long as things go his way. When they don't, he's quick to strike out or eliminate whatever's obstructing him, or work it somehow into his greater plan. He also seems quite excited during battles and does things like grin crazily when he finally goads Jiro to attack him seriously.
In some ways Saburo hasn't had much experience to develop his emotions further. He had only been in existence for a month or so. While he has a lot of knowledge, he hasn't had much contact with the outside world except when it involves his purpose. Nor does he seem to plan beyond that because killing Jiro will (he believes) fulfill his reason for being.
Powers & Abilities Saburo is an android (technically a cyborg) created with the strength, speed, and intelligence to take down his brother robot (Jiro or Kikaider.) He's cunning and manipulative as well as strong. He can control other robots of his type (and possibly other types) with a whistling frequency that jams their signals. He also has the still living brain of Dr. Komyoji (the man who created him) placed inside of him, so he has access to his knowledge. He is stronger than a human both in his regular, and especially in his more powerful form.
What items will they be bringing with them? His clothes, shades, his hikaida shot/destruction blade weapon, and If he ever gets his chip out, the blade will transform into the gun version.
Third-Person Sample:
A solitary figure paced through the underground lair. Saburo paced through whirring assembly lines, each one churning out parts for new androids. Some fully assembled machines and a few humans worked slavishly on Professor Gill's newest 'scheme.' He scoffed under his breath without even slowing. There was no point in staring at fools and waste-- and they were, if this was another attempt to find and destroy Kikaider. That should be his task. No 'toy' had any business obstructing him. His lips forced into a grimace almost without him noticing. His gloved hands balled into fists--but quickly relaxed. No need for that. He would fulfill his own destiny without a shadow of a doubt.
Saburo didn't stop until he found Gill himself. Then he leaned against the cool stone wall and smirked at the human 'mastermind.' Of the two, Saburo looked more human, a slight, dark haired figure in equally dark clothes, and shades that hid his eyes. It struck a contrast to Gill's lavish robes, flute, sunken gaze.
Humans! Their delusions of grandeur were ridiculous at best. Saburo looked at the human who could supposedly 'command,' him, and he only saw a coward with halfrate methods. Not worth obeying. The cyborg's smile etched deeper, more mocking as he stood there longer.
Gill returned the smirk with a suspicious glare. "There will be no more failures. I'm sending another robot to destroy Kikaider--and you will go along. If it doesn't destroy him, you--"
"Heh. If you don't want wasted time, I'll go and do it myself. I was born for it."
"Go with the other robot." That suspicious look never left Gill's eyes. Hm. It seemed as though the Professor didn't trust him. A nuisance, as Saburo needed to be alone with Kikaider. Or else he couldn't truly do whatever--anything--was needful to accomplish this. Nor did he like the idea of Gill spying on him and possibly stopping him mid-battle.
"When that one fails, will it be my turn to destroy him?"
Gill's expression wrinkled at the mockery in Saburo's tone, but he only said: "Yes, in whichever way you like, if that happens."
"You won't be disappointed. He is my prey, and I know his weaknesses."
With that, Saburo rose to go. Even as he turned his back, that fierce smirk spilled across his face again, reaching his eyes behind the dark tinted shades. Maybe he would destroy Gill's other robot himself, and save his dear brother the trouble. Kikaider's destruction should be at his hands only, and nothing else needed to get in the way. He'd waited long enough for his turn.
First-Person Sample:
Don't think I'm finished with you, Kikaider. I know you're here somewhere--and if you're not, you will be! I'll wait for that moment.
I was born to destroy you. None of your foolish 'human' weaknesses are going to stop me from that. You should rise above them, and fight me!
Hmph. I'll make you see this my way, with or without your Gemini. Heh heh. You'll fight me seriously before I'm finished with you. You make it so easy, 'big brother,' with those humans you cherish.
I'll be patient. In time, you'll come and make this fun. Until then--
[Uncomfortable pause. Really he doesn't want to think about how long it might be.]
--I will find ways to amuse myself.
Note Saburo is a re-app, last played here in January of 2010. Since it's been awhile (for him and me,) I'd prefer him to keep his memories, but to slowly regain them back over time instead of recalling them right away.
