Sticks and silicon stones

Anyone else read the recent news about the USB stick lost and found in a pub car park? You know the one I mean: the confidential tax details.

The press have picked it up as yet another example of incompetence and amateurish disregard for data security. Fair enough, it might be only that; although such casual carelessness persisting after all the recent incidents of data loss is horrifying.

I think they've missed the point again, possibly for self-interested reasons that do not bear close scrutiny.

Meanwhile, the civil servants who had access to that data should come under an intensive and intrusive investigation of their bank accounts, expenditures and income. There are no good reasons for that data to on a key fob, and a lot of very bad ones.

I can't link to recent stories on the BBC, as iPhones don't permit the use such exotic functions as copy-and-paste; I would be grateful if one of you could do so in a comment.
