O Captain! My captain!

Robin Williams passed away on August 11, 2014.

This news made me sadder than I can say. He was a big part of my childhood. At a time when I knew actors by their roles and not by their real names, Robin Williams was an exception. He gave characters so much life that they would stay with you for decades. He was Peter Pan, he was Jack, he was Mrs. Doubtfire. The films were spectacular. They took you on adventures and finished with feelings of hope and triumph.

It is heartbreaking how this man who gave so much joy, suffered so much inside. He is so loved and admired. That his life ended in tragedy tells me that it must have been a truly difficult battle. I hope he has found peace now.

I will remember him most through his films. They weren't just about laughter, they were about happiness. I choose to remember him for the good that he has brought into the world. He has enriched us all with his presence and I will be forever grateful. If there is anything else to take away from this it's that a smile really is the easiest thing to hide behind. We can't say what each other is going through. We have to try to hear what they're not saying.

He will be missed. As for the rest of us, carpe diem. Stand on your metaphorical desk and try to see things in a different way.
