So, another election has come and gone, though the threads continue to linger. I hope they don't drag out the virgina race too much longer...
I have to say, I'm not that disappointed that the Dems took control of both houses of Congress (Virgina just went to Webb, I found out as I am writing this). And, by "not that disappointed" I actually mean "pretty glad".
I've become increasingly disillusioned with the Republican party over the last several years, being more libertarian (socially, not economically) myself, which seems to be at odds with the Rep's social policy these days. That's not to say that the Democrats have become a better party in my eyes. They've simply become no worse, and as the Republicans sink farther and farther, they become (through our flawed two-party system) the only reasonable (electable) alternative. Plus I'm slightly liberal-leaning in my economic policy, and since neither party seems to believe much in "freedom" anymore, economics and war are the only major issues I can vote on.
One notable exception: I would have been happy to oust the current Illinois governor. He's not even that good of a Democrat, and the things that have happened to education in Illinois under his reign don't help matters. Healthcare hasn't been great either. And, if a Democrat can't help with education and healthcare, what can you do? I don't know if Topinka would have been any better, but as with most of these elections, a CHANGE is almost more important than the actual candidates, and as I said earlier, there's really only one other option most of the time. God, I don't think our two-party system has ever been as big of a pain as in the last 5 years...
Every other vote was for whoever was not the incumbent, which just so happened to make my ticket pretty heavily Democrat, as well.
