Well today I went to a prom, and apart from the discomfort it was.....ok.
I have nothing against classical music, just the mentality that sometimes goes with it. A lot of rars and sloane rangers who turn up in their best gear because its the thing to do, for some reason that really gets to me. For the last year ive become really anti-pretentious, and anti doing things jsut because of the way it looks or the status that comes with it (forgotten the word for that). I remember I was in Switzerland a few years ago, and as a last minute thing had decided to go to th opera. I turned up looking like Id spent the day climbing a mountain, which isnt surprising considering thats what id been doing, and I actually got one lady looking me up and down for the one interval. I just hate that mentality, its not doing the whole classical genre any favours, just reinforcing the whole snobbery sterotype that a lot of people have of it.
ANYWAY, it was Bach, Beethoven, Haydn and Janacek. ermm, im not really a classical muso buff, so I cant go into detail on them, just say what I thought . Id always been told that Bach was more personal and accessable than Beethoven. Beethoven you admired, Bach you loved. I seemed to find it different, Haydn I felt was a musican that I could get to know and make mine, Bach I was fairly ambivilent to untill the second movement (was suite in D if that means anything to anyone)when I found myself almost emotional and maybe a little watery around the old eyes. Beethoven left me cold, I agree with the original statement, I admired him but I couldn't love him. As for Janacek, I think I would need to listen to him again, he's not played often enough for me to form any hope of an accurate opinion on him.
That was me being pretentious for today. Ive kinnda promised id go to another one. should be interesting :)
So that was my bank holiday, not very exicting I have to admit, but it kept me off the streets.
oh, and I saw lulu looking very orange.
