So I bought this '84 Scirocco right... 300 bucks, blown head gasket, pulled out the head and found some rather interresting things underneath the hood. The one that was most intriguing was the hose plug we found, apparently Snap-on makes a socket that is only used for plugging useless vacuum hoses in your engine bay, because when Chris and I were working under the hood we found a Snap-on socket wrench that was jammed into a vacuum line to plug it! LMAO! I've never seen anything like it in my life, definitely a poor home mechanic was working on this little grocery getter at one point. It looks as though it has an aftermarket intake of some sort, so I believe this hose was supposed to go to the intake tube, but when he replaced it he just figured he'd plug it up with his extra socket wrench he had laying around. Chris took a picture, maybe he'll post it. We also found an old rag stuffed in the bumper along with another vacuum hose modification, this one just a screw jammed in the hose to prevent vacuum leakage. Apparently on Scirocco's, at least this year, the exhaust manifold is only secured to the exhaust down pipe with two "C" clamps, but they aren't even clamps... they're just pieces of metal in the shape of a C... very odd if you ask me... I thought it was another custom thing to reduce weight or something, because we all know that C clamps weigh less than four exhaust bolts... but I checked online and they actually sell replacement C clamps for the Scirocco exhaust! All in all, taking the head off this four banger was a lot easier than I had imagined, and it makes me wonder why people dread when a head gasket blows. Plus I was able to find the gaskets online, and everyone around here wanted almost $100 for the set, I got it online with an oil pan gasket and shipping for $54. So it definitely pays to look around on the net. In other news I'm now the Sous Chef at Canterwood, I'm in charge of all the fine dining and family night menus, so I get to play around a lot and have lots of fun.
