A free horse is an oxymoron.

"Free to good home" ads of any sort usually make me want to cry. My Mum, too, which is why we had animals exploding out of every corner of the house, and six horses. No animal that ended up with us lived a short or unhappy life. Even the sheep we rescued lived til they were 15.:)

But yeah, it still upsets me...but a free horses is definitely the equine equivalent of a cheap car.

What on earth is a "loss of use" mark? Are they actually branding horses as unsound now?

I'm not sure about the loss of use mark, but it wouldn't surprise me here. You need a passport for every horse and if it was unsound, I can imagine that a responsible vet might want to make that very clear so no one could claim ignorance for the poor animal's suffering.

Just to say - that as I understand it, in the UK at least - a 'loss of use' mark signifies that the owner has at some point claimed on their insurance that the horse is now unrideable due to injury/illness, and has thus been received the financial compensation for this. The stamp is, I think, supposed to stop these horses then being sold on for riding to another owner.

Of course, as you point out, with rehab some of these horses might come sound again!

A teenager at our barn recently saved up enough to buy her first horse. She got a gorgeous animal for an excellent price. She didn't have enough money for a vet check ( ... )

I pulled out the cage card and read it. "Reason for surrender: Owner got new couch."

Augghhhhhh! This is unacceptable!!!! I need an angry icon like yours for such things.

And that poor girl with the sick horse! ;_;

Desi was free. Then I shelled out just over $3K in vet bills to fix her cracked hock from the abuse she suffered at her last owners. She's oriceless to me tho :-) It was veryhard, esp as I was durt poor at the time, but when I got her I knew there was a chance she'd never be rideable, so it didn't really matter. I just wanted HER, you know?
