After the sparring session that Ed and Alphonse held, they took their audience into their apartment with them.

"I didn't get to mention it to Shader when she came last time, but there's a mat by the door where footwear gets left," Ed said as he opened the apartment door. "I did get to warn her about the random cat toys that're around."

((No problem, I was just going to ask when/where but I got distracted by making dinner and reading my flist. Just Florette for the moment.))

Florette stepped out of her low-heeled shoes and set them on the mat. "You have a very impressive fighting style," Florette said. She thought it looked a little--a very little--like savate, only a great deal more acrobatic. "How long have you been studying it?"

"Teacher taught us at the same time she taught us alchemy, so about half our lives," Ed said as he wrestled his boots off and dumped them on the mat a reasonable distance from Florette's shoes.

"She believed in training the body as well, so..." Al shrugged. "I don't think what we ended up using the skills for was what she had in mind when she taught us though."

Shoes off, he started heading off to the kitchen; rolling a stiffening shoulder. "Want anything to drink while I'm getting something?"

"Mother had us--my sister and I--take fencing lessons for a similar reason" Florette says. "I was never very good though. Aion had me learn to use the halberd. Soda will be fine."

Ed waves Florette vaguely towards the seats. "Go ahead pick one."

"I've sometimes made those with alchemy for use in fights. But I more commonly made spears or transmuted part of my automail arm into a blade. Mostly that last one. Got to be very good at it."

Al returns from the kitchen in fairly short order with a can of soda for Florette and a glass of water for himself.

"Meanwhile, I typically didn't wield any weapons if I could help it," he says as he hands Florette her drink.

"Why not?" Florette asked. She opened the can and sipped.

"I prefer to avoid fights and talk things out when possible," Alphonse said, settling down on an available seat with his own drink.

"I can understand that." She looked thoughtful for a moment. "Sometimes fighting is unavoidable, for one reason or another." She smiled slightly.

"Yeah. And that's when I watch Brother's back for him so he won't have to worry about keeping an eye on as many directions."

"You have not seen Aion do it yet, but demons can turn their limbs into weapons--usually a lance of some kind," Florette says, taking a seat. "They are usually also much taller than the average human. A halberd is better when you want to break the bones of something that heals itself very quickly."

Ed winces. "I remember Envy doing that once."

Ed nods slowly. "Like homunculi. But since what I normally fought were chimera or normal humans..."

He pauses before adding "That is, when I did do any fighting. There were plenty of times when I got assigned stuff to do where I didn't need to do any. Or if I did because of some unexpected surprise or other, didn't need to make weapons."

Florette nodded. "A weapon that is availible at any time, and may be dismissed at any time, is the most convenient. Especially when there are times when you would prefer to talk instead of fight."

"Or are supposed to talk instead of letting your temper push you into a fight," Al comments sotto voce, earning a glare from his brother.

Ed focuses his glare at his brother a little longer before returning his attention to where it belonged.

"Yeah. There's been times when being able to do that has gotten me out of trouble."
