I have some Pirate stories to recommend for any and all who might, in the slightest bit, be interested. If you enjoyed the movie and feel like reading, take a look!
These are a hodge-podge of stories, as I like to read all kinds of pairings and characters. This is also not all-inclusive. I may do another post like this again. Some of these have been recced a bunch of times, some of these hopefully less so.
By Moonlight, by
circe_tigana. A lovely little Elizabeth piece. I adore Elizabeth and so I seek out stories like this one, that really bring her to life.
Finding North, by
cupiscent. (Link goes to website) This story is often recced and gives some tells of how Jack came to captain the The Black Pearl. I would call it a Jack character piece, but it's labeled as Jack/Pearl.
Walking the Sargasso Sea, by
kurage_no_fic. This was written for the Norrington ficathon. It's perhaps a slightly darker (edgier?)look at the Commodore without going very dark at all, and I like that. It's like someone just wiped the glow and brightness of Disney off and got to the real stuff underneath. And I do so love Norrington. *g*
I lack a Will piece to recommend, sadly. I read a few, but none that really worked for me.
From Hell: Down Below and its two companion pieces
From Hell: Flames and
From Hell: Judgment Day, by
viva_gloria. These are three separate yet connected pieces that show moments of Jack with Will, Elizabeth, and Norrington, respectively. Gloria writes a great Jack, imo.
The Longest Night, by Circe. A lovely Jack/Elizabeth piece. I am unable to articulate why I am so drawn to Jack/Elizabeth as a pairing, but this story sort of touches the core of it.
The Seduction, by Circe. Another Jack/Elizabeth! weee. This one is also an AU that branches off early from the movie. You can go more places in an AU with this pairing than you could staying within the canon, which, you know, I don't really have a problem with.
Never Won Fair Lady,, by
malisita. This one is coded as being J/E, but it seems more an exploration of Elizabeth, to me. It's lovely, whatever it is.
Of Shackles and the Sun and its sequel
A Peculiar Education, by
nilchance. I confess to a fondness for Will/Elizabeth stories, too. These are both delightful, lean heavily towards J/W/E, and also have a great Jack voice, which is always fun.
Firecracker, by
the_dala. Another Will/Elizabeth (and Jack) that just enchanted me. I love all the characterizations in this. Highly recommended.
The Spitting Image, by
teresa_c. Long, plotty, gen fic, with great characterizations. Fun! I love this, not only for the fun plottyness of it, but I really just love Will/Elizabeth stories and this one is a lot of fun.
The African Star, by
erinrua. Another long plotty, gen fic, with fabulous characterizations. This one has a Will I really love. Will as a character is a harder sell for me. I find him a bit... unformed, really. Not fully developed in the movie, but stories like this go a long way to making me love him. Erin also writes a great Elizabeth, which, you know, has me sold. *g*
A Pirate's Life, by
elspethdixon. And another long plotty story, only this one develops into J/W/E.
Triangulation, by
fabu. This is a J/W/E fic that goes where threesome stories rarely go. It's that rare threesome fic that truly speaks to the difficulties in dynamics and balance of an actual threesome relationship, beyond just the sex. It's long and it takes its time, and it's just something you can really sink your teeth into. There is a sequel in the works, and a few other companion pieces, all of which I recommend. The story can also be found on Melusina's
website. Interludes, by Melusina. More J/W/E by Melusina. This one is a series, and is more lighthearted and smutty. And, although I love J/W/E for itself, I confess to seeking it out in large part for the Jack/Elizabeth interactions.
Leverage, by Gloria. While I enjoy stories about Jack and Will and I love their exchanges and dialogue, I usually don't find myself drawn to Jack/Will much, as a pairing, but I did enjoy this story, as well as her other Jack/Will
Out of His Depth.
Stepping Stones, by
voleuse. Jack/Anamaria, because you can never have enough Anamaria.
Bough Breaking, by Voleuse. POTC was made for threesomes, I think. All kinds. Every combination. This is the very rare Jack/Will/Anamaria.
Blood Brothers, by
cherrysher. Continuing with the Anamaria theme, here. This story is a bit darker, a bit edgier. Shades of H/C, but not really. It's coded as Jack/Norrington/Anamaria.
Dreams (Island of), by
dreamiflame. Jack/Norrington/Elizabeth. I love the dream quality to this. The set up is a little harder to buy, but I still enjoyed it.
Salvage and its sequel
Reconstruction, by
gueda_mazaka. Another rare threesome - Norrington/Will/Elizabeth. This is an AU where Elizabeth marries Norrington and Will goes with Jack, but it's very different than the usual for that scenario. I was intrigued by these stories, mostly for the Will characterization, which is handled differently here than in most other stories, and for the Norrington/Elizabeth relationship, which has a touch of Hardy's Sue Bridehead from Jude The Obscure. Fascinating!
Searching for the Sea, by Circe. I can't resist reccing at least one Norrington/Elizabeth. And so I recommend the really hot one. *g*
Trust and Honor and
Compromises, by
the_stowaway. These are the last two installments of a larger series which can be found at the author's website,
Cultural Infidelities. The whole series is worth reading, but these are the best of them, imo. Largely Jack/Norrington and Will/Elizabeth, it also has just about every other combination imaginable including the now oft referred OT4. Trust and Honor also has one of the best Jack/Elizabeth scenes I've read. Yummy stuff.
Marooned, by Gloria. And now we come to the Jack/Norrington portion of the evening. This one is an AU, but in a historical sense, which you'll understand if you read the story. (It's a bit disquieting, actually. If what she wrote had actually happened, this would be a very different world). I'm reccing it because Gloria really writes a wonderful, easily believable Jack. And while you're at it, read her
The World Turned Upside Down.
Carnival, by
isagel. Just because Jack-in-disguise is always fun.
Moonverse stories, by
firesignwriter. I'm tempted to say read everything on her page. And you should, but the Moonverse stories are the J/N. This is slash at it's best, with the wonderful, seductive, first-time, and the angst, and the eventual parting. Her
Jjail fic is unfinished, but it's worth it anyway.
Caribbean Cartography, by Dee. (link goes to website). One of the best things about Jack/Norrington is that there's usually a long yummy seduction/dance between the characters.
The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot, by
inkbug. This story is also unfinished and I hesitated to rec it for more than one reason, but decided to go ahead mainly because this is one of those slash stories that actually makes me completely believe in the two characters falling in love. The author employs a nonlinear narrative and an unusual style of prose that both works for and against the story, but, you know, I couldn't put it down, which is really the true test. Hopefully it will eventually be finished.
If anyone reading this has other stories they'd like to recommend, by all means please tell me about them in the comments. There's a good chance I haven't read it!
