this and that: aka procrastination

My schedule has finally lined up well enough for me to participate in one of Pemberley.com's group reads. They go in rotation, and currently the group read is of Mansfield Park.

Mansfield Park is not my favorite of Austen's novels, but I would venture to say it is the more difficult, the least glossy, and in some ways the best in terms of complex characters. No one is very bad or very good in Mansfield Park. Particularly in light of my last post regarding strong female characters -- Mansfield Park is full of them. I think there is hardly a stronger (and more incredibly drawn) character than Mrs. Norris. What a bundle if issues.

I'm going to try and focus on Sir Thomas, actually, because I'm fascinated by his effect on all the women in the novel. I have this wild theory that Sir Thomas is what Fizwilliam Darcy would have been if not for Elizabeth.

Anyway, the group read is fun, although I must be careful, or else all I will do is read Austen and make little niggling points about random, obscure quotes from the text, instead of all the other hundreds of things I should be doing. *g*

In other wholly unrelated news, they've cast James Kirk in this new fangled movie.

I noticed first how blue his eyes are... *g* Must be from all those hours spent carefully describing Kirk's wonderously hazel eyes. lol.
