Lead is cynical. Cynicism has helped him survive all these years -- it's not helpful to believe everything those crazy Ensigns come up with. He'd have gone crazy years ago. And this Lysa Dunter had always been one to watch -- apparently for good reason.

From what they know, the Ensign has no reason to lie. But from what they know, she had no reason to shoot the mechanic, either. They obviously don't know as much as they should.
"I still don't understand," she says, watching Dunter closely. "Why did you shoot him?"
