oom; facts aren't always the truth

Syal wipes her eyes again quickly while her squadron leader isn't looking, then follows him into the interrogation room. Her helmet's in her locker and her blaster is in the possession of the senior officer who'd been in the hangar; the one who'd taken one look at her and sent her to the 'fresher before sending for her CO ( Read more... )

"So you shot him."

Lead is cynical. Cynicism has helped him survive all these years -- it's not helpful to believe everything those crazy Ensigns come up with. He'd have gone crazy years ago. And this Lysa Dunter had always been one to watch -- apparently for good reason.

Shalla gazes at Dunter as she nods, face carefully blank.

From what they know, the Ensign has no reason to lie. But from what they know, she had no reason to shoot the mechanic, either. They obviously don't know as much as they should.

"I still don't understand," she says, watching Dunter closely. "Why did you shoot him?"

Syal glances up at VibroSword Lead, wishing he'd just sit down.

Attempting to ignore him, she looks at the woman as steadily as she can and answers, "He lunged for my blaster pistol."

Standing, leaning over the desk -- it intimidates the younger recruits. Lead's pretty sure it's working, but he adds a severe frown anyway for his next question.

"Why did you have a blaster pistol?"

Irritated by him now, she doesn't bother looking up.

"So I could take him into custody."

"No," Shalla says, shaking her head slightly. "You took it out to take him into custody. Why did you have it in the first place?"

"I always do," she explains, aware that it's not common practice like in her father's day. "When I got old enough to begin dating, my father insisted that I carry one."

Actually, Wedge being the cynical father he is with regards to boys, he'd insisted she carry two. She just sticks to one these days.

That makes slight sense, and she's never actually seen a problem with carrying around weapons.

(Odd rules these days.)

"And you drew on him because he was trying to suborn you."

Syal nods. "'Do a few things for us,' he said, meaning the Corellians."

Because that's totally believable.

"Ensign Dunter, you're a very low-ranking officer in a carrier full of people who could do the GA more harm than you if they were turned. Why you? What makes you so vulnerable to this sort of attempt?"

Lead says, "Your leg," and Syal stares at him blankly.

"What?"

"Your leg."

She looks down at her right leg and frowns: it's vibrating again, bouncing up and down like it always does when she's nervous. She glares at it, summoning up willpower, and it stops.

Despite her amusement -- she had that same problem, once upon a time -- Shalla doesn't smile.

"Answer the question, please."

Syal blinks and looks at her. "I'm..."

She hesitates before looking up at Lead apologetically.

"I'm Corellian."

Lead frowns and glances at his datapad: Lysa's file is open, her holo and details on the screen.

Home planet: Ralltiir

He considers, then comes up with the logical explanation. "Right. Born on Corellia. Raised on Ralltiir."

"No," Syal says, shaking her head. "Born on Corellia ... raised on Corellia. The recruiting officer assumed, and put down, that I was raised on Ralltiir because I have Ralltiir citizenship. But I didn't get it the usual way. I bought it."

Almost six years ago, she realises; before applying to the Academy. That had been an interesting trip.
