I'm currently taking American Sign Language to fulfill a requirement for my major. I have a horrible history with attempting to learn a second language. I've gone through the foreign language department much in the same way that Madonna went through NBA players in the early 90's. Total carnage.
I have a exam on Monday, so tonight I decided to head to Barnes & Noble to do a little studying. By "studying" I of course mean spending an hour reading magazines and nibbling on a peanut butter cookie. I finally get around to opening my ASL book and I begin practicing some signs as I'm following around in the book. About five minutes later I become extremely self aware of exactly how stupid I must look making these insane hand gestures so I decide that I'll head home to study. As I get up and begin packing up my satchel I glance to my right and I see someone gesturing for my attention across the cafe.
I look over and I see this guy signing to me. He was signing "Are you deaf?". Now my sign language teachings should have kicked in and made me sign, "No, I am not deaf. I am able to hear." but the moment I saw him signing my mind totally went blank and I completely freaked out. I start making this wild gestures with my hands that in no way what-so-ever translate into sign-language. My arms and hands are going so crazy I could have been directing planes into a hanger. I had no idea what the hell I was doing. I think it became painfully aware to the guy as well because he stop signing, hung his head and slowly shook it in disappointment.
Does anyone know how to translate, "You've been served!" into ASL?
