I got brave and watched the video taken by a passenger of the Qantas (the airline that has never lost a jet) plane, that landed with a gaping hole in its fuselage. The passengers were remarkably calm, even though they were all wearing those little air masks, that you think , or at least hope, that you will never have to wear. A stewardess wandered down the aisle, reassuring people. The video also shows the screen on the back of the seat with its rapidly descending altitude. Then the videographer aims out the window, and one can see that it is a perfect landing.
Even though there was a happy ending, my husband declared, "I don't want to watch that."
I had a different reaction. "What a wonderful airplane, is the 747. Thank you, Boeing." Even with a huge hole in its fuselage, and the dumping of much of the luggage from the hold, and the loss of cabin pressure, it was still brought to a perfect landing by its crew. The captain sounded happy, but nearly routine in his post-landing announcement.
Even before seeing the video, I was a fan of the 747. As soon as I clear airport security, I make my way to the windows closest to my departure gate to check out waiting aircraft. If I see the British Airways colours painted on the tail of a 747, I will remark to anyone in the vicinity, "Look at that. What a beautiful airplane!"
