The woman said to the young man, "Wont you ever be married? No man wants to be alone his entire life."
The young man said nothing and listened to the the train whistle from the coast below. The wavering sound forlorn and yearning fit inside the silence and made the woman's question plain. The young man said, "I think I love a woman sometimes and other days I care for myself more."
The old man sat in the corner near an open window pretending to listen for the next train whistle and when it was clear there would not soon enough be a voice for another empty place he said, "Maybe your penis is turned-up too loud and you can't hear your brain."
