The Gifted Paradox:

Jan 09, 2012 17:59

These are some of my favorite television characters:

Temperance Brennan:

Spencer Reid:

Abigail Sciuto:

Sara Sidle and Gilbert Grissom:

Sheldon Cooper:

These characters have three things in common:

- They’re gifted

- They’re socially awkward, or eccentric/off-beat/different from the norm

- They’re often patronized by other people who often treat them like small children or dogs

I think of this a the gifted paradox. I guess that’s why I identify so much with them, I’m in the same situation (except that I’m not a character played by a former model ¬¬), and it amuses me to see it played out on TV. I’ve never understood it, but it amuses me. The problem is that, if you point out your IQ people think you’re conceited, but if you don’t people think you’re a kitten robot encyclopedia who’s otherwise crazy or a pet.
