We know that we're going to run out of easy-to-access oil and coal at some point relatively soon -- even the most conservative estimates I've seen say that within a century, the easy stuff will be gone. There are objections to any specific alternative technology that make it more expensive and less useful than fossil fuels, true, but that (to me) doesn't mean we shouldn't pursue any of them; it means we should pursue ALL of them, or at least most of them, and use each one where it's best suited.
This seems so self-evident, so commonly sensible, that I can only think of two possibilities: either I'm missing something glaringly obvious that explains why this is not a practical plan, or our government is so short-sighted and/or the oil companies are so rapacious that they recognize the problem and are choosing not to do anything about it.
