It has rained almost every day for the past five days -- which is great news! We were officially classified as a "Severe Drought" area, which, coupled with the late hard freeze, was making the first year on the farm not-so-productive from a food standpoint.
We've taken in more yellow straightneck squash and zucchini squash than we know what to do with. Blake's parents came into town this past weekend, so we made fried squash. And we made a squash casserole last night, which turned out to be surprisingly good. I'm going to take some squash into work tomorrow and take some to our old neighbors, Trish and Terry.
We have itty-bitty snap beans, and I'm hoping they'll be ready to start harvesting in the next couple of weeks. And even though all the pears, apples and peaches were killed by the late frost, we did find one great surprise -- we have concord grapes! Not many, but some nonetheless. And we have wild blackberries, which we made into cobbler when Blake's 'rents were here. It turned out well, too (another surprise).
I still believe the tomatoes, carrots, onions and bell peppers will produce in due time. They're just behind the curve and more late-summer, anyway.
As for Tapper and Annie, they are now officially Outdoor Puppies. We transitioned them this past weekend, and from all we can tell, they are super-happy with the decision. Tapper chases Matthias-bunnies and birds all over the place; Annie drinks vodka and smokes Capri cigarettes while listening to NPR. And the house stays cleaner, longer. It's all good.
Blake removed a couple of trees with his Big Megaman Tractor, and I'm hoping that we can shore up Kitfox Pond soon so that it will hold water even in drought conditions. All in all, farm life is good.
What's up with you?
