Dear pals,

Please, pretty please, tell me about some books you've read that were published this year. 'Specially really cool non-fiction books. Also 'specially really cool books written by women. Also all kinds of books - poetry, YA, etc.

Much thanking of you goes here.

xo,
M.

Do works of fiction written this year by men count? One from three ain't so bad!

"Steep Approach to Garbadale" - Iain Banks

I haven't read much this year. Though as cool books go "Shape of things to come" by HG Wells was rather interesting. 1933 isn't quite this year though and as far as I know HG Wells was a man.

Oooh hey, I've got that one, the Banks, and I keep forgetting I've got it. It needs to get added to the list right quick. Thanks for reminding me.

No probs. I think it is actually one of his better recent works. He has been through a bit of a slump lately, with some of his writing coming across as angry rants against Bush, America, the war and the like. I think the break up with his wife didn't help either. Hopefully he has got it out of his system and we can look forward to his new SF book due next year called "Matter".

Wow. You are far better informed than I about the state of Banks! But that almost makes his recent stuff sound all the more interesting. I've only read a handful of his books, and none of the Culture ones, but I've got this huge pile of them looking at me, wondering when they're going to be read.

Well, I have met the guy IN REAL LIFE! I also have all his books, some signed. And to be truthful, I am a member of an Iain Banks mailing list which doesn't usually discuss his work unless he writes some. Taps fingers impatiently!
