So, I picked up this new game totally on a whim, and I must say I'm rather impressed. NaviaDratp is sorta like chess on steroids. In fact, it's chess with a totally dynamic strategy behind it. You have your pawns (in two different flavors), you have your king (or Navia), but there the similarity ends. You must "summon" your additional pieces onto the board, and you must pay points generatde from moving pawns and taking enemy pieces in order to unleash the full potential of a given piece. Many of the pieces are a double-edged sword, however, as while they become more powerful in one way, they become restricted in another. The beauty of this game is that there are no point limits, no single way to win (there are in fact four ways to win) and no terribly overpowering pieces. You really don't even need to obtain any more pieces beyond the starter set, as both sets are very well balanced. The pieces are even pretty mice to look at (which is saying something for a collectible miniatures game).
I must say, if you're looking for something totally different from a game, at least give it a shot. Hell, I HATE chess, and I found myself really enjoying this game.
Granted, this game ain't for everybody. Sapphiremagus was about ready to scream by the end of our second game. If you're a chess fan, however, give it a shot. What've you got to lose? Plus, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than G.W., and there are no unstoppable units. Very nice, Bandai. Bravo.
