The Newsroom... I really want to like you this season more than I am.

And now for my latest thoughts on the Newsroom.

You know what guys, Genoa was never going to work for me. That's the problem. It was never going to work.

It's too much threat to my favourite characters, and I don't deal well.

Because there will inevitably be spoilers )

I don't know why the soldier is lying, but I have a Machiavelian theory about why the general is. The short answer, is that he isn't lying. As far as I can remember, he never actually said that Genoa happened, even to Mac and Charlie. However, he did say that he researched Jerry Dantana, so theoretically he knows about Jerry's obsession with drones and the like. We also know that the general wants to be able to use chemical weapons. That's ostensibly the reason he's talking to them in the first place. Maybe he wants the story out there that they did, in hopes of manipulating events in his favour on that score. He does order everyone else out of the room but Jerry Dantana. Maybe he suspects that Jerry is desperate enough that he'll leak do what he did. And if he doesn't, no harm no foul.

If Mac is "leaving" over the hiatus I'm going to be mad. I'm assuming that the finale has to have something good happen in it. Nothing good's happened all season. This is my new theory as to why it's so dark. There's some payoff coming in the finale. (Let me have this theory. I actually might not get through the next three episodes without it.) Although, I for one will be annoyed if Mac quits for personal reasons. Especially after she stuck it out through S1 when Will was way crueler.

I agree. The Nina plot wasn't bad. And Nina isn't a terrible character or anything. The plot was just pointless. There wasn't enough payoff for all the things tied up in it. Maybe there will be later in the season, but I'm not optimistic at this point. If Mac is indeed leaving in the finale, I think Will almost has to go after her. If not, seriously what the hell?

The talking out loud about the big brother/little sister thing is annoying to me, but for fic reasons. Which don't really count. Otherwise I'd love it. The Don and Mac scenes were far and away my favourites in the episode. I thought they were so amazing.

I just, yeah, I want a little less turmoil. I get that the show has to be dramatic, but there hasn't been a break from it yet.

That's an interesting theory you have. I want to know what the hell is wrong about Operation Genoa already. This build up is getting me nervous.

I want to believe something good will happen by the end of the season too. I really, really do. I keep thinking that Sorkin will take care of every unresolved issue, like the voicemail and Mackenzie's reaction (or lack there of) to Will and Nina as well as Will's feelings for Mackenzie that he really need to talk about out loud with her and not Sloan or Charlie or any other character who's not her. I think we and they deserve to have the issue dealed with in a spectacular way at this point. Especially considering their personal relationship has been neglected for the most part of the past 6 episodes. I want Nina's plot to have a meaning which is not just Will taking a second look at her and realizing she has a heart.
Seriously, what the hell?

I doubt every unresolved issue will be taken care of by the end of the season, but I do think that either Genoa/the professional situation or the Will/Mac situation has to have some kind of payoff, if not both. If the season ends with both hurtling towards disaster, I'm going to be seriously displeased.

I'm assuming the payoff to the Nina situation is Will realizing Mac is his Goldilocks planet, but that could have been better done, to be honest.
