This is more about me kind of wanting to post than actually having something to say...

Accurate subject line is accurate.

I wish today was Friday. I mean, I really wish today was Friday. Then I wouldn't have to go to work tomorrow. (Though, I suppose in three minutes it really will be Friday, but the result isn't the same). My brain actually stopped working on Tuesday, when I went to the wrong independent movie theatre to meet my friends. Actually, it stopped working earlier than that. Thankfully, it seemed to start working again today (yesterday was a bit interesting too). Never did see the movie. And it's not even the weekend yet.

Also, it appears that it is now thunder-storming.

Although, speaking of movies. I did see Joss Whedon's Ado About Nothing a few weeks ago. It was pretty delightful. It makes me sad that Nathan Fillion and Tom Lenk will never have a TV show where they play a pair of incompetent Shakespearean cops, because honestly, they were hilarious as Dogberry and Verges.

I really liked the adaptation, and I am picky about my Much Ado adaptations.

Amy Acker was amazing. She played Beatrice a bit differently than I've ever seen her played. Her vocal tone was soft and sincere, even playful, but she was still strong at the same time. She was really amazingly delightful. Her soliloquy, and her reaction to hearing that Benedick was in love with her still were just great. Really a highlight.

Also, most of the cast was pretty awesome. Sean Maher as Don John was fabulous. Completely slimey and evil. I wasn't really expecting him to be so good at it, but he was. Really good. Possibly my favourite Don John in all the adaptations I've seen.

Really, everyone was good. I'm just mentioning the standouts (for example, Claudio and Hero were perfectly good, but I'm less interested in their part of the story). Reed Diamond as Don Pedro was absolutely fabulous. He was spot on with the rhythm and everything. Loved him so much.

Speaking of the rhythm, I am pleased to report that although the trailer gives you the impression that the rhythm of the dialogue is going to be choppy, it is in fact only because it's a trailer and they're cutting together disparate parts of dialogue (I thought that might be the case, but I wasn't sure until I saw it).

And Clark Gregg as Leonato was also great. Particularly enjoyed that he often seemed to be half-drunk. Ashley Johnson as Margaret was good too. She has such a distinctive voice, that I can't help picking her out every time I see her in anything. (She's plays Mel Gibson's daughter in What Women Want, and the inadvertently murderous daughter in the first Christina Frye episode of the Mentalist.)

I thought Boracchio was occasionally weak, and I didn't love Alexis Denisof as Benedick. I didn't think he did a terrible job. Sometimes I liked him. He was fabulous at the physical comedy and at some of the moments (like when he called Claudio out, well played sir). But there were other times, some of the more romantically sincere moments that he just didn't work for me. Although, part of the problem may be me, and a bit shallow. I find him a bit odd-looking, in a way that is off-putting, adn that certainly didn't help. But I also didn't like the way he delivered some of the lines, and I may be a bit sensitive to that.

But, even though it wasn't 100% perfect, it was pretty damn good. Like four and a half stars out of five good. To the extent that I am now debating whether Amy Acker or Catherine Tate is my favourite Beatrice. I liked that it was in black and white. I like that Joss Whedon essentially just decided to do this. I LOVE that he apparently has a theatre carved into the grounds of his house, with stone seats. I love this play, and this was a really good adaptation.

I'm buying it. Because I apparently need to own about five versions of this play...

Books have been hit and miss for me over the pass week. I've started at least three. Only one has caught, thus far. I'll probably finish the other two, but they're not engaging me as I wish they were. I feel like this week has been one where I've needed better mental distractions with which to occupy my brain, or something.

This weekend I plan on writing about 15k of my hetbigbang fic. It's actually going well. And I don't think it's going to end up being as long as I thought it might. But I have it all planned out now. THIS PLAN IS TOTALLY FEASIBLE. No one contradict me.

I've been thinking about the well-written depressingness that is the Newsroom S2 I have managed to come up with one good thing that has happened to one of the characters in the first three episodes! It is a bit of a stretch, but I think it still counts. 2.01 opens with the control room having massive technical problems during the middle of the broadcast, AND, Mac in her awesomeness manages to fix several issues in the span of about three minutes while they are on the air. This is my example of a genuine win! I am pleased to have found one, because I don't know why Sorkin decided to have S2 be all about the angst, but he obviously has. I didn't think that a single definitively good thing happened in the first three episodes, but it has. Sort of. I AM COUNTING IT.

(On the other hand, I'm somewhat dreading next week's ep, because who knows what Sorkin will pull out of his hat next on the road to catastrophe.)

In other news, I went on vacation last week. I now have a photo of the Haven police station. This pleases me.

And I think it's probably best if I end this post now...

much ado about nothing, hetbb, the newsroom, haven
