When I stopped the car and listened I was slightly embarrassed by the sheer amount of noise pollution we had created. When I mentioned this to Jess she laughed and told me that I was the one who wanted the adventure. The sun had now completely set and a light glow in the west only lit the horizon. Stars started appearing in the east. I turned off the music, but left the car lights on and got out. Jess made a protesting sound
The lake was beautiful. It was majestic and silent. I shivered. Jess slammed the car door shut and leant on the hood. “You’re not one for sloppy car make-outs, are you?”
“No,” I shook my head.
“Pity, I would’ve liked too.”
“I wouldn’t, I can’t blame the alcohol now. I’m driving. She’s beautiful isn’t she?” I said in full admiration. Jessica followed my gaze “It’s just a lake Emily. I mean, it’s nice enough, but it is just a big hole full of water. Are you going to explain yet why you took me here?”
“Just a lake?” I felt insulted, couldn’t Jess appreciate the calmness and clarity of it. I could only see it’s magic. I could feel its memories, my memories. I sighed. “Ah well, you wouldn’t understand anyways.”
“What do you mean by that?”
I smiled, “this place has a lot of history for me. I lived around this area when I was younger. One o’ those country folk, y’all know.” I imitated my old accent. “I used to go here a lot, especially when my dad was drunk and hitting my mum.”
“You were a country chick?”Jess looked amazed, “I’d have never known.”
“I’ve gotten good at hiding it.” I smiled.
“No kidding, I imagined you growing up posh in the suburbs or city. I mean you practically live in suits and high fashion dresses and your accent…” She looked at me.
I nodded. “When I ran away when I was sixteen I tried my best to forget it all you see. I tried to get rid of my roots.”
“But still you come back here, and you took me here.”Jess looked as if I’ve granted her a strange honour, she looked nearly reverent. I laughed: “Come on Jess, it’s not that special. I took you here for a whole different reason.”
“What then?”
I laughed and took of my heels and put them on the hood of the car. Then I got out of my pullover.
“Ems, what are you-“
“Race you to the lake?” I tossed my shirt in her face, and pulled of my skirt.
“You’re crazy!” Jess shouted after me as I tossed away my underwear and started walking to the cold water.
“And you’re scared!” I shouted. I jumped into the water. I was hit by a wall of cold. I felt my skin tighten and a momentary loss of sense of direction as I was engulfed by the water. I swam upwards and broke the surface. I opened my eyes and looked around me. I looked at the stars and the ink black water. I let myself float.
A moment later the sound of a splash and loud gasping made me aware that Jess had followed. I turned about and swam towards her.
“It’s f-f-f-ucking cold.” Jess said to me as she kept herself afloat. I kissed her. “Keep moving, you’ll stay warm.”
