I am sorry for the crazies.

Yesterday was Aaralyn's two month birthday. If that's a birthday. Two months old! I really wanted to give her a cupcake with a candle but I didn't think that that would be a good thing. And there's really no way to gussy up formula to make it more appealing, at least not to my knowledge, so instead I just used it as an excuse to get her all dolled ( Read more... )

Needs exist because there is something to sustain them, no? We wouldn't get hungry if there was no food, would we? We wouldn't feel cold if there was never a warmer temperature that we could compare it to.

This kind of sounds like the old "if a tree falls in the forest" anecdote. The version of this idea I find myself leaning on the most though, is that we have low points in our life so that we can better appreciate the highs. At least I think that jibes with what you're getting at.

I think that what I was trying to get at was different, but I still believe in what you're saying completely. That's why we have to die in the end right? Because if we were immortal there'd be no way to appreciate life.

Treasure this age for a long as you can, because it'll be over before you know it. Darcy is almost two and it's sometimes hard for me to believe that she ever used to be a little baby.

There's just such an urge to capture some things that we reach for whatever we have, whether camera or brush or pen, in hopes of keeping it for as long as possible. A very happy two months to the little one.

The oldest symbols are religious, but the oldest profession pushes a different kind of fulfillment. There's bipolarity in most things, and I'd argue some might not need that something spiritual. They just don't erect statues or create symbols indicating their lack of need, because a vacuum needs no representation.

I bet she would thank you for that if there was more to her vocabulary than monosyllabic gurgles and spit up bubbles, so I'll do it for her ;). Thank you!

You really think that there are people who genuinely never need/yearn/want for something more than the physical? The mundane? I don't see how that could be possible, myself. We see wantings like that substantiated every day. I mean, that's what depression is. It's what a mid-life crisis is. It's what church-goers do. It's what unhappy millionaires do. Where do you think teenage angst comes from? And especially now that we're getting worn so thin between things, you know? That's the thing, there isn't a vacuum. We've been just about as close to genetically programmed towards the spiritual realm as you can get. Maybe people don't see it through statues or physical manifestations/symbols, but that doesn't mean they don't seek it out other ways.

I think that there are people who are satisfied with (to backtrack to another comment thread) signs instead of symbols, basically. But I also think that they are in the minority.

i blame you for the reason i didn't comment sooner. ;) marc_blucas January 29 2007, 16:29:30 UTC
Two months old. I can't believe it. I love those fancy tiny adorable little dresses. I plan on dressing her in those until she gets old enough to where she starts saying NONONO and shrugs them off and maybe decides she doesn't want to wear them anymore because they're too girly for her but I won't care by that point as long as we got this time for her to wear them now. You have people talking about when she's a teenager? When I talk to people they just oooh and awww over her being a newborn! Oh dear god. No wonder you're so protective of her ( ... )

Oh god, I can't imagine when she's a toddler. I bet "No" will be 99% of her vocabulary. And yes :( I get teased lots. It's okay though :D

Well the tree falling thing is more along the lines of things existing because of witness. And the heat/cold example was probably more along the lines of values only existing because of spectrums along which they could be judged. I guess the 'we wouldn't get hungry if there wasn't food' is probably the closest to what I was actually trying to say.

And stupidity and stubbornness are perfectly applicable, it was a good tangent ;)

I miss it already. Do you think that's bad? God I miss it.

This was so adorable, but I've just got to tell you how utterly confused I got when I tried putting my hand over my heart and circling it around. Clearly I am retreded.

Haha. It's basically the fact that if you look at something spinning from above, it's going the opposite direction as if you look at it from below. clockwise/counterclockwise are totally relevant to position. That was the gist at least :)
