So, it was phone contract renewal time, which means time for a new phone. Now, last time I had some shitty phone which was free with the plan, upgraded to a razor. The Razor, while used, was fine and dandy.
So, something about a phone that advertised me being able to use my MP3's as ring tones made me go with the LG Shine. Of course they have those fucking deals where you shell out money for a bunch of extra shit and in the end spend a little less on said extra shit. I got a car charger, a case, and an SD card.
Car charger is rather helpful, so I can't much complain there. The case was awkward and was returned before I left the mall. The SD card I got for transferring music. So, apparently, AT&T doesn't like the idea of you using your own music for ring tones. Right, so what they meant with the advertising was you get another fucking MP3 player that can't use normal headphones and you need our special ones, which also make it fucking futile to hook the damn thing up to a car stereo with an AUX port. But wait, it's 2008, why do I need another MP3 player? I have three of the little fuckers, soon to be four.
Now, the manual never comes out and tells you it's nonexistent rules for this. So, what you are left with is a lot of trial and error, and boy for me, lot of both. See, my new laptop has the SD reader, my PC has all my MP3s, I didn't have any CDRs at the time, and my flash drive is a paltry 32mb... So, what I was doing was transferring a bunch of shit over, then dumping everything off the flash drive, and repeating several times. What's that phone? Files too big? Ok, I can understand that. So... the manual has nothing on how big is too big? Well, apparently too big is over 300kbs. Also, it has to be under 30 seconds. Fine, I'll play. So, after some editing with fade in and outs to mask up a song abruptly starting in the middle of itself I am on my way.
Well, that would still be too easy. A new message! "Non-acceptable Content." Onward to the internet! Apparently my option here is to hack my phone. Forecast: High chance of success with potential bricking! Gonna have to pass. So, I go see what AT&T wants for ringtones. 2.95 for 30 seconds... So for a whole song that'd be upwards of 11.80. How about you go fuck yourself? Not only that, the garbage that's available, my god. Yes, I like my metal, so of course there's a million Metallica tones, but I would never pay for those, as far as Iron Maiden goes there's run to the hills, which is an ok song, not one I'd really want though. Fine, let's go see the popular genres of today, hip-hop, I'm okay with some of it. But I am not ok with what's available. FUCK YOUR UMBRELLA! No public enemy? J5? We are not doing well here.
No, while I am not a good translator for phone services I think, "Non-acceptable Content" means "Give us more money to fuck you over harder" or "Free stuff is not acceptable." Gonna have to pass, and unless some kind of miracle solution falls into my lap I'm returning the phone Tuesday for something that can vocally connect me with another person over great distances and send the occasional text based message. While the camera on the phone is decent for what it is, with the money I'll get back I could throw down a few hundred more and get a really nice camera.
I would probably consider keeping the phone if it told me, "No fucking way!" Instead of, "Hey pal, this file is too big." and then, "HA, just kiddin', you can't use your shit!"
