MABUHAY ANG PILIPINAS! (Boxing)

Holy crap, Manny Pacquiao beat Oscar De La Hoya last night.

I was trying to follow the match online last night but there wasn't any live coverage so I went to bed instead. Maybe I should have tried to watch the fight with the neighbors - I think there are a couple of Latino families in my building, and I heard the Philippine National Anthem through the floor/ceiling last night. On second thought, maybe I did the right thing :-p

So, Manny - I admit I was nervous going into this match. I don't know much about boxing, but I have at least heard of Oscar (and, naturally, Manny Pacquiao and all the guys Manny has defeated in recent years), and I personally thought that Manny should have deferred moving up a weight class and defended the last title he won (WBC lightweight, off David Diaz last June). He's won four major titles in four weight divisions and keeps vacating them; and I was afraid that moving up all those weight classes will eventually slow him down. I am very happy to be proven wrong :)

I'm sure that back home, there was hardly any traffic in the streets as usual, and there was major cheering when Manny beat Oscar, and priests in church were probably thinking of how to work the victory into their sermons, and Filipinos are all feeling good about themselves again. Yes, the Filipino can!

SIDESHOW: I'm pretty sure that, in the ring, the best place to advertise is on the seat of the fighter's trunks because his/her backside faces the audience most of the time. However, there's something disturbing/amusing about seeing the logo for Ricoa (a Philippine cocoa company) on Manny Pacquiao's rear end :-p

Also, the Pacquiao fan page in Facebook says his nickname is "Pacman The Destroyer." Again, there's something pretty amusing about that :D
In other news, I am still buried under a pile of Things To Do...and it's finally snowing in Waltham! The snow this morning is patchy and sadly scrubby-looking compared to the pretty powdered-sugar white-out I saw while leaving NY last week, but...snow!

america, pilipinas
