Well kids, it's been a wild wild month or two at school as I realize for the billionth time that it is quite impossible to be in multiple places at once. Brilliant.
I love my classes and I love it when I get to take nothing but science. Of course I believe in the liberal arts (why else would I be here) but there is something amazing about science and discussions with my nerd friends where we argue about topics such as the heritability of cancer, the old school style of sequencing of proteins on electrophoresis gels and the pKa effects of amino acid substitutions. And being able to have those arguments makes me realize exactly how much being a student here has taught me and how much I'm in love with education. I was chatting with a sophomore girl who is a biochem major in the ochem lab that I TA and I asked her if she had any specific research interests and she answered exactly how I would have then- that she likes science in general and is waiting for something to jump out, for that "aha!" moment of realizing a love for something... somewhere I encountered that moment and I'm not even sure where it was. Montana? Africa round 1? Certainly Africa round 2.
So here I sit with a million dreams and not enough time to pursue all of them. Looks like grad school applications will head out to Cornell, Wisconsin Madison, Santa Barbara, Berkeley, Davis, Washington and British Columbia. That encompasses enough programs that I dearly adore that if I'm lucky enough to get in to one of them, I'll be happy as a clam.
So back to hot cocoa in my poofy bed in my darling house with my structural biochemistry notes so I can learn enough to rock an exam on Wednesday night. Then it's off to Blingham and the parents for a long weekend road trip with a few of my favorite friends. It's hard to believe that midterms round one are almost over and fall break is here. This semester that I thought would be incredibly long is going really really really quickly.
