I downloaded speccygeekgirl's podfic of your story, kind of on a whim - I like Sherlock Holmes, and have another Holmes/Watson podfic, so it was sort of a case of "Eh, Why not?"
Well, let me tell you I loved your story!!! It was so very clever!! I loved the modern American university grad school setting, and the fact that Holmes was perfectly aware of the books about the consulting detective residing at Baker Street.
I loved Watson's voice in it, and the relationship between the characters. It is a perfect juxtaposition to have your Watson returning from our current conflict in Afghanistan, while Doyle's was writing of a Watson home from the British conflict more than a century ago. I thought that put it squarely in a believable and compelling context.
You are a fabulous writer, and I enjoyed the podfic very much. I am, more and more, downloading podfics of stories I haven't read, in order to listen to them at work. I'm very glad that your story was one of them.
Well, well done. I would not have believed that an AU of this sort could have worked, and you pulled it off spendidly. Looking forward to reading (actually READING) more of your stuff.
