Decided to venture up this valley recently. It's a place I've hardly visited, but I like it because it's usually quieter than the other Dales valleys - less crammed full of tourists.
Found a place near Reeth called 'Maiden Castle'. Apparently it's an Iron Age fort. Weird place - perched half-way up a slope, overlooked by the summit. Definately not a good defensive position!
Another odd thing was the double row of stones leading into the fort from the east... like an avenue...
Excellent place, well worth an explore!
Also called by the Tan Hill Inn; highest pub in England... but suddenly realised I'd forgotten my wallet!
Doh!
I drove on leaving the sweet, hand-pulled pints un-supped... How will I live it down...?! :-p
