On this day in 1971, a navy medic was waiting in a military hospital waiting room in Yuma, Arizona.
At approximately 9:27 a.m. a bull dyke navy nurse kicked open the door and barked "Horton!"
The medic, not wanting to agitate the scary nurse, stood to attention and replied "Here!"
The nurse stomps over to the man and places a pink squirmy bundle in his hands. "Horton - this ones yours!"
The man, smiles with tears in his eyes as he sees his baby daughter for the first time.
He looks up at the nurse and, quite seriously, says, "But I wanted a St. Bernard."
Every year, my father used to call me around 9:30 in the morning on my birthday to tell me that story.
Since he can't tell it anymore himself, I thought I'd carry on the tradition...
